It's cute, but don't buy one!
The Crosley Cruiser is popular because it's small, lightweight and easy to carry around. But, so is a CD player, and MP3 players are even easier to carry! The reason people are into vinyl is to hear a level of sound they can't get from compressed digital audio streamed from their phones, smart speakers, etc. Unfortunately, Crosley compromised every single part of this record player that could have helped the listener enjoy the truly high fidelity sound available from well cared for vinyl records, and so the experience is still lost on anyone using a Cruiser. The worst part is the built in speakers, which are tinny and shrill. My phone and laptop's internal speakers (much smaller than the Crosley's), have a better tone than the Crosley. You will get no bass, mids are weak, and treble ... The Crosley Cruiser is popular because it's small, lightweight and easy to carry around. You will get no bass, mids are weak, and treble is over driven by speakers better suited for the "beep" speaker of an old MS-DOS computer. The tone arm is cheap, and the platter is noisy. The crude auto-stop switch puts too much back pressure on the tone arm as it nears the end of the record, which can be bad for the record and the needle. The turntable itself is noisy, much more than one would expect from a belt drive. I do not recommend the Crosley Cruiser for new records. It may wear them out prematurely (though it won't instantly shred them like some fear), but you will not experience the potential of vinyl through this set. I do not recommend the Cruiser for older records (78s, thrift store records, beat up 45s, etc.), because the shrill treble response of the Cruiser emphasizes all the dirt and noise these records have, even though truly vintage tables with ceramic carts are mellower with older records. If you had your heart set on getting a Crosley, there are better ones out there. At least get a bigger one with bigger speakers. They are pretty much all made cheaply, but some will give you a better experience than the Cruiser. Better yet, search the forums on line for recommendations on true turntables you can buy for a good price. If you really, REALLY want a Crosley Cruiser, I would not recommend paying full price for a new one. They can be had pretty cheaply right here on eBay, and most are in mint condition because many people are getting rid of theirs, hardly used. (I wonder why!) You can play around with it, and when you're tired of it, you're not out much money. If you're stuck with one, search Vinylengine for an article on how to improve it to get the best experience. Use headphones for the best sound quality, which is still not that great, but better than the internal speakers. Then when you get tired of it, give it to a young kid for Christmas so they can play with it before they get serious about vinyl. If one of your prized LP's should find its way on a Crosley, it's not ideal, but not the end of the world either. I hope this saves you from buying one new, or helps you if you already have one.
