BRITISH PROGRESSIVE ROCKSTARS TRIBUTE TO "THE WALL"
Does the world really need another “Wall” tribute album? That’s the question that one must ask after approximately 11 different versions of the Wall by Pink Floyd are available at last informal count. OK, fair enough but what if you added Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, most of the members of Yes (old and new), and members of King Crimson? Sound progressive enough for you? In 2005, all these artists collaborated on a Billy Sherwood produced version of “The Wall.” Even though all these free-form artists are on this cd, they don’t really cut loose like you would expect King Crimson to. The voices are still British sounding, the music is tight and professional, the beats to each measure are almost exactly the same as the Floyd version. The vocal phrasing, the guitar phrasing: ... Does the world really need another “Wall” tribute album? The 2 CD set is very listenable and flows just like the original concept album did. The kicker cut is Chris Squire’s vocally led “Comfortably Numb.” It has a mandolin interlude, and Squire’s bass licks punching up the song. For my liking, though, there is waaaaay too much Billy Sherwood who does roughly half of the lead vocals on this cd. Sherwood is talented enough, but he’s mainly known as an add-on to later Yes, and as a producer. Consider this pool of talent that is on the cd: Steve Howe, Ian Anderson, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Robby Krueger, Ronnie Montrose, Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Alan White, Steve Morse, Elliot Easton, Ansley Dunbar, Tony Franklin and Dweezil Zappa. It’s a virtual Who’s Who of British Classic Progressive Rockers. When this collaboration came out, reviews were extremely mixed: most people appreciated the great sounding cd set, but asked themselves the initial question posed earlier. My take is that while this is a stunning assembly of superstars, it is not a ‘necessary’ cd. If you lost it, you’d probably not replace it at retail price. This is a great version of THE WALL that includes performances by some of the greatest prog rock musicians ever born. The boys from PINK FLOYD should be very proud.

This remake of the Masterwork Pink Floyds The Wall has so many well seasoned talents such as the members of Yes , Jetro Tull , Asia too many to mention here ,that it posibly could be BETTER than the origianal . You WILL love this CD . Digitally recorded making the sound as new as it can be , with exelent playing by all the musicians . A must have in your collection .
