My thoughts on the VN-3100PC after purchase.
I bought this nifty little gadget to keep track of those flashes of brilliance that we all have. You know, the ones that always seem to come to mind while driving or in other places where writing would be inconvenient or near impossible. But my little 3100 has proved to be just what the Doctor ordered for so much more. Consider: The 3100 has four folders to record in and keep one’s life organized - A, B, C, and D. I use folder A to record those inspirational thoughts mentioned above, folder B to record reminders to myself, folder C to record considerations to be discussed with my doctor when whence we meet, and folder D to keep track of words whose definitions I am not quite sure of. Since the device is so small and lightweight I keep it in my shirt pocket for easy accessibility. ... I bought this nifty little gadget to keep track of those flashes of brilliance that we all have. The 3100’s built-in microphone is amazingly sensitive for both recording and playing a file back to see if you want to keep it. When a folder becomes too crowded it is a simple matter to plug in the device’s USB cable and transfer the files to a PC or laptop. Once on the PC the files can be treated like any other computer file. One can even record holiday greetings to absent family members, attach them to an email, and share your thoughts audio wise rather than written. For me the 3100 is just about perfect for keeping my thoughts in order. What I like best about the device is the fact that it allows me to pause in the midst of recording a file when my mind becomes a blank. When I get my thoughts back together I resume recording and save the file when complete

Overall, this is a great product. People, DO NOT buy a digital voice recorded unless it is the kind that connects with a standard USB cable to your computer. For Olympus, that means you need to see "PC" at the end of the model number. The software for that works great, and transcribing is vastly easier from your computer. You can minutely control where you are in the playback, you can repeat any section as ofter as you want, and the quality is clearer and louder than from the device itself, in case your original is soft or hard to hear. It picks up sounds better than the old tape recorders we used to have, and I can put it in my shirt pocket and tape conversations I have with people, or even lectures if I am near the front. Not bad...
I use it for college lectures, and it has helped me out a bunch, however the memory keeps going down. I put all the recordings on my computer, then delete them from the device, however ive lost 3-4 hours of recording time on the highest level, which means i can only record about 4 hours before i need to transfer files to the computer. it is a great inconvience that the memory continues to go down, but at the same time my grades have gone up since purchasing it.I use it for college lectures, and it has helped me out a bunch, however the memory keeps going down. A good little recorder, not PC compatible
It does what it claims to do, simple control layout, good sound quality, especially at the higher quality settings. Just be aware that there is no USB connection for transferring files to a PC, so if it is to be used for dictation it can only be played back using the same machine it was recorded on. This makes it impractical for dictation/transcription use, or anything else that involves transferring the sound files to a computer. But for recording lectures or making notes to yourself for later review it works fine.It does what it claims to do, simple control layout, good sound quality, especially at the higher quality settings.
