GRAND PRIX is John Frankenheimer's film about the nine-leg world championship of Formula 1 auto racing, and stars James Garner as driver Pete Aron. During the opening race in Monaco, a collision sends Pete's car flying into the Monte Carlo harbor, and British driver Scott Stoddard (Brian Bedford) into a wall. While Pete survives unhurt, Scott may lose the use of his legs, and many hold Pete responsible. Jean-Pierre Sarti (Yves Montand), whose marital boredom has led to an affair with fashion editor Louse Frederickson (Eva-Marie Saint), wins the next race at Clermont-Ferrand. Afterwards Pete accepts the sponsorship of Japanese business magnate Izo Yamura (Toshiro Mifune), and begins to romance Stoddard's jaded young wife Pat (Jessica Walter). Pete wins the Belgian leg of the contest, but Sarti goes into a depression after skidding on a wet track and killing two children in a crash. After Pete also takes the German Grand Prix, Stoddard amazingly returns for the Dutch event, and, driving on sheer grit, pulls out a victory. He proves it's no fluke by also winning in Watkins Glen, N.Y. and in Mexico, making the championship competitive once again. Essentially a soap opera interspersed with racing footage, the film's existence was ascribed by Frankenheimer to his fascination with the sport and a desire to spend time in Europe. That said, the racing sequences are still among the most realistic ever put on film, jammed with wide-angle helicopter shots, you-are-there car-mounted cameras, and then-fashionable split-screen sequences. GRAND PRIX is a definitely a film or racing fans.

Be Careful What You Order!!!
This DVD is sent in the HD DVD format and therefore, will NOT play on most computers or any standard DVD format players. HD DVDs are the format that LOST out to Blue - Ray. So - unless you have an HD DVD player - do NOT buy this disk. So then I purchased on Bay the two disk normal DVD set of GP and here is the review: OK - so it's vintage F1 racing but if you have any interest in overlooked great films from the 1960s you shold get this dvd. First - the tansfer from film to disk is well above average, the film stock clearly was clean, bright and not chopped so the rendering to disk shows very well on a large flat screen. Secondly - the movie itself is very entertaining - I recall seeing this one as a kid and being throughly thrilled by the racing scenes, and they still stand up very ... Finally, this movie is right up there with other greats from the period, I am thinking Zhivago and Bridge - Kwai in that the craftsmanship in terms of acting, editing and music are all top notch. Take the music for example - just like in Zhivago - there is an overture to the film and various themes are introduced - then early in the film - these themes are matched to characters and then as the plot progress and the lives of the characters play out - so do various interpertations of the musical themes. It is something just not seen in modern movie dreck. James Garner is the American star in this film and he is at his best, supported by a host of European actors of note. If GP were remade today - they could not do a better job.

This is just a super cool remake an old film, with the Great James Garner and Eva Marie Saint. Formula 1 car as that were meet to be run.This a a great movie in HD , all the sound , and special features come to life. Pushing themselves and there cars to the limit, Flat out racing in the 1960, Reminds me of the street Racing that once to place in Watkins Glenn, New York, not far from me, Just a must have movie if your a Formula One person and chasing that Checked flag.This is just a super cool remake an old film, with the Great James Garner and Eva Marie Saint. Formula 1 car as that were meet to be run.This a a great movie in HD , all the sound , and special features come to life. If it was a special DVD disk, it should have said so.You need to indicated clearly that the product only plays in certain equipment.
