About this product

Product Information

The Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS makes getting around a breeze. This device is super sleek and slim, making it small enough to slip into a pocket or purse when you need directions away from your car. The Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS also comes with a suction cup so you can mount it easily to your dashboard and easily check directions and traffic conditions while you drive. The screen is 3.5 inches, making it large enough to easily view maps and compact enough that it will not interfere with your view of the road while on the dash mount. The Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery to keep you mobile as well as a car charger so you will never run short on power or navigation. The Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS navigation system has options for both driving on the road and for pedestrian navigation. The battery lasts up to four hours, so you will have directions when you are out in the world on foot or if your car battery dies. The pedestrian navigation setting is enabled through optional CityXplorer maps. Select the public transit mode to get local transit information, and easily navigate buses and tramway, metro, and suburban rail systems. The Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS software uses an intuitive interface that makes setting your destination and seeing your route easier than ever. The interface will greet you audibly with two simple statements: “Where to?” and “View Map.” Navigation has never been simpler. All you have to do is answer and you will receive directions to your destination. The Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS comes preloaded with regional City Navigator street maps. You will have access to maps of the continental U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Maps can be viewed in either 2D or 3D format and model your progress on screen like a video. You can also use the Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS’s touch screen to access other services, like its millions of points of interest (POI), which are comparable to Google results for the locations of gas stations, restaurants, and tourist destinations, to name a few. You can even search for a point of interest by name with the Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS. Touch the color screen of the Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS to easily type in and look up services and addresses. Once you enter your destination, the Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS will provide voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that will get you to your destination quickly. This GPS device also speaks the street names (text-to-speech) so you will never have to take your eyes off the road. The Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS has software for HotFix satellite prediction, which calculates your position, and can help you avoid traffic and get to your destination faster. The Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS comes with ecoRoute, a green feature that calculates the most fuel-efficient route to your destination, and updates with information about your fuel usage. The Garmin nuvi 1200 GPS has several standard features that take it above and beyond as a GPS device. Travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, and calculator give you all the important information you need when you travel. The enhanced pedestrian navigation capabilities help you avoid getting lost while on foot, and the “Where Am I?” emergency locator will get your exact coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the location of the closest emergency service providers.

    Does the job

Seems to be a good product with somewhat limited map coverage (lacks Canada, for example). Small screen is OK as it does not block view of road. Product misrepresented on e-bay, as description showed that it had European maps.

  • Top critical review

moderately satisfied, I should have asked the proper questions before the purchase so buyer beware

The unit functions Properly but I didn’t realize that the map version would be so out of date. The last map update is 2008, pretty old. And now they want $50 for the update

  • Garmin GPS

Once it got all connections (didn't come with the USB cable), read the instructions carefully (I'm not good at instructions), got everything uploaded, downloaded and fully ready to go, I hit the parking lot with it. The "home base" had been set to Wichita, Kansas, and had one heck of a time getting it cleared out and reset. Took well over a hour. Once I was successful, could enter info and it WORKED. Haven't used it on a road trip yet, just playing with it around town, but definitely think I got my money's worth. Back in the 90s my husband and I had a "seafarer's GPS". Guess that's what it was called. We paid almost $400 for it, it came with no numbers or directions loaded. He wanted to use it for finding fishing spots in the Gulf. Turned out to be a waste. It was also a Garmin, ...

  • Good basic unit but lacks life-time map updates

I have yet to use this GPS except for one very short errand just to see that it was working properly. I bought this to replace a Nuvi 450 that I had for years that would no longer retain satellite contact. This unit appears to be an ample replacement. The only disappointment is that this unit did not come with lifetime map updates. In the future, if I feel that the maps are too out of date, I will probably buy a different Nuvi GPS. It would probably be cheaper than what Nuvi wants for the maps. Had it been really clear that life-time map updates were not available, I probably would not have purchased this unit. Be careful - there is a one-time only map update available, which I installed, but the wording in the ads leads one to believe that this is a life-time update. Unfortunately, ...

  • Good entry-level navigator

I got this navigator as a replacement for an earlier model Garmin that I used for at least four years. It's a very nice upgrade. The technology has improved a lot in that time, and the price has come down considerably. I don't use the navigator all that much, but when I need it, I really need it. I've had it for a day, so I haven't used it much yet. These are my first impressions. The good things: 1. Faster satellite pickup. That was my biggest complaint about the old navigator. 2. Text-to-speech capability. Not a huge deal, but nice. 3. Better shape for carrying in your pocket. 4. Better user interface. Very easy to use and intuitive. 5. Newer maps (obviously). It's nice that the navigator now knows about the (relatively new) street where I live. The not-so-good things: 1. ...
