Older technology, lots if hidden features, easy to work, and easy to read face!

I have used the Garmin 201 since the late 90's. It was a hand-me-down from my husband who continues to upgrade his watches. I am very satisfied with the older technology. This watch has many hidden features, the face is big and easy to read. The buttons are easy to access, it holds a 14 hour charge, and because it is rectangular in shape, it fits my skinny wrist perfectly. This watch, being older technology and its size may not be for everyone, but I absolutely love it. Third time I have replaced it (lost the first one to my own forgetfulness, second one my husband was playing around with it and????), so glad it is still around on ebay.

    Short Life!

I have written other reviews on Garmin GPS devices and specifically the Forerunner Watches. I like the concept but these devices just don't last. It seems like that if you get five years out of these you should consider yourself lucky. ...and the worst part is that Garmin doesn't seem to care. If you call in, they don't try to help fix, they just offer you a slight discount on a new unit at full MSRP pricing. If you don't mind paying for a Garmin "subscription" rather than a Garmin product that will last, then you might find this acceptable. I don't.

  • Great training tool

The Garmin 201 is a really fun addition to my running routine. When I get back from a run, I can look at my mile splits, get an idea of my pace, and know pretty much exactly how far I've gone. The battery works great, it lasts the whole week before I have to charge it. One weakness is that it has a serial interface which pretty much no computer has anymore. I found a Keyspan serial to USB adapter and it works just fine.**************One problem I have is that he wrist strap is much too small. I don't have big wrists by any account and it barely gets around my bare wrist. If I'm wearing long sleeves, forget about it. I have to wear it against my skin and then cover it up with the sleeves.*************LIKES: Fun to see stats after a run/ Rechargeable battery has good life/// ...

  • Garmin-Can't Beat it!

The 201 is a great GPS training system. Since I bought this one the 301 has come out and it has a heart rate monitor that the 201 does NOT have. If I was going to purchase one-GET the GARMIN Forerunner 301 or the latest model out. My husband loves this GPS device. He can run and not have to calculate his distance. As he is running it will tell you exactly how many miles you have gone. It also uses "bread crumbs" to track where you have been so you can turn around and follow your exact path so you won't get lost in unfamiliar territory. We have not found a place where the Satelite technology does not work. GARMIN is an EXCELLENT Brand-WINNER!!!!!

  • Garmin Forerunner 201 works great

I have been using the Garmin Forerunner 201 for 2 months and it was helped me a lot with my training. I run most of the time on the streets and even in the areas that have a lot of tree coverage the 201 may get a weak signal but is able to track my run without a problem. Software from Garmin is OK but I prefer using SportsTracks, a downloadable shareware program. From what I understand some the newer models are more accurate. It would also be nice to have the heart monitor, although I do not think I would use it during ever run. I'd recommend the Garmin Forerunner 201 for those on a budget.
