I was very pleased with "The Last Days of Mussolini." I never saw this movie before I bought the DVD, but I did know that Rod Steiger portrayed Benito Mussolini in another film before "Lion of the Desert." What makes "The Last Days.." especially interesting is the time period that it covers. The Republic of Salo (1943-45) has fascinated me for quite some time, as well as the efforts of the RSI forces fighting the partisans. Like "Downfall" did for Adolf Hitler, this film provides us with an accurate account (as far as I can tell) of what happened to Mussolini in the final days of his life. It is also worth noting that there was a degree of divisivness between the partisans regarding Il Duce's fate. One would think that they were all bent on getting revenge, but I did not see that here. In closing, the movie's ending - in which Mussolini and Clara Petacci are shot to death - is powerful. I have little doubt that when this film made its debut in Italy back in 1974, audience members were brought to tears.Read full review
It is one of the few almost-completely historically-accurate films ever made, brilliantly--and most authentically--acted, written, and directed, and never less than most grippingly rendered.
