very satisfying product, except for recording functionality
this is a good product -- hardy, durable, handsome. my tapes play well in it and sound good coming out of its small speaker. it is sensibly designed and easy to use. i have however had problems with the recording feature. "small" meaning the feature as far as i can tell is unusable -- every time i try to record sounds and play them back, they come out as a loud whining beeeeeeeeep. i don't know whether this is due to the tapes i've been trying to record onto, which i took out of a box of hundreds of tapes at my radio station and have no details about -- so i don't know whether they are actually writable tapes, though i can't imagine we have hundreds of blank tapes lying around that can't be written onto. i've tried both with a microphone via quarter-inch cable into the AUX IN port on the ... this is a good product -- hardy, durable, handsome. my tapes play well in it and sound good coming out of its small speaker. it is sensibly designed and easy to use. i have however had problems with the recording feature. High quality product and excellent value for your money!
I love cassettes! I have about 400 that I recorded with the music I personally enjoy. I purchased one of these a few years ago, and even though I have high quality (more than $350 each) Sony, Marantz and Panasonic cassettes players, I find that I use these Califone's the most (they're playing while I read, am on the computer, etc. I NEVER listen to radio). That's why I purchased another one. I have one upstairs and downstairs. I use only batteries in them and found they are NOT "battery eaters." Batteries last a long time in them. The controls are very easy to use, all on top and not tucked away on the side somewhere. And they're built to last probably 40 years or so! Excellent speakers. No negatives that I can honestly state.
