A 1960s forerunner for the 1970s Love Boat
If you liked the Love Boat you will find lots to like about Promises, Promises. This is a Rom-Com skit set on a cruise ship where two couples, neighbors at home, go on a cruise together. This was made in 1963, when Playboy magazine was sold from under the counter, so a lot of the activities that were titillating at the time might have lost some of that edge for today's viewers, but the humor(for a Love Boat skit) is still there. Noonan and Mansfield are a young couple trying to get pregnant, but Noonan fears he is impotent and has a doctor's medication to help him in the romance dept. Hargitay and McDonald are a yuppie couple, but while Hargitay is more consumed w his business than he is with his wife, his wife is being neglected and is bored w hubby. Some moments are fun, some are a little tedious, some are warm, some are loving and there is a surprise or two along the way. By the end of the cruise, everybody is happy and together again. Not a spoiler, this is a Love Boat skit after all. The viewer is left w a warm and happy feeling having spent time w some warm and flawed but happy people on an ocean cruise. Enjoy!

Milestone movie is just OK
This movie is the film that put an end to the Hayes Code. It flaunts Jane Mansfield nudity in a story that is at best just fair. For great entertainment this is not the film to see but for film historians you may want to see it to better understand watch was cutting edge sensational in 1963.
