About this product

Product Information

When his friend and coworker suddenly dies, train enthusiast Finbar McBride (Peter Dinklage) inherits an abandoned railway station in rural New Jersey. A dwarf who avoids social contact whenever possible, Fin treks out to the property and moves in. However, his newly isolated life is disrupted by Joe (Bobby Cannavale), the outgoing operator of a roadside refreshment stand, and Olivia (Patricia Clarkson), a reclusive artist who is grieving the loss of her son. As Joe and Olivia slowly bring Fin out of his shell, all three people are affected by their newfound friendships.Written and directed by Thomas McCarthy, THE STATION AGENT wonderfully mixes drama and comedy in a beautiful countryside setting. Although the storyline acknowledges that the main character is a dwarf and refers to this on numerous occasions, there is much more to the character of Fin McBride than his short stature. As Fin, Dinklage gives an outstandingly nuanced performance, one that is perfectly complemented by Cannavale's happy-go-lucky Joe and Clarkson's mourning Olivia. The movie also features excellent supporting turns by Michelle Williams and Raven Goodwin. Touching but never sappy, THE STATION AGENT is a charming film that easily joins the ranks of other quirky rural dramas such as WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE? and THE STRAIGHT STORY.

    "THE STATION AGENT"

Was always fascinated by this movie. It just draws you in. I could watch it over and over. And the fact that you have the great young actor Bobby Cannavale who went on to do such great work in Boardwalk Empire and now HBO's Vinyl. And just look at the great cast in this small budget film. Patricia Clarkson, who I fell in love with as Kevin Costners pregnant wife in the remake of, "The Untouchables." Peter Dinklage of, "Game of Thrones." The beautiful Michelle Williams, Paul Benjamin with his memorable performance in, "Do The Right Thing." and John Slattery of the great Mad Men series. I love this film. But it's not for everyone. My brother hated it. I told him his punishment will be to watch over and over again until he sees the magic of this film.

  • One of our favorite videos!!!

Station Agent is one of the most entertaining videos we own (and we own lots of videos). It's cute, fun, funny, and touching all in one video. The acting is brilliant in this video! And thank you, meltonrock, for sending us the copy that has close captioning on it! We had two other versions without close captioning and like to hear every word when we watch our nightly video! I would highly recommend this video to people of all ages. Each time my husband and I watch it, we comment that we wish it was longer -- it's that good!!!

  • The greatest Indie EVER

The characters are so original and ordinary, that's why they're intriguing. One is and outcast because of an obvious reason, but without that one little "hindrance" he would have this totally normal life. Then you have the socially withdrawn, depressed, wounded person who chooses to become a recluse instead of dealing with a HUGE heartbreaking experience and with out this experience she would have a totally normal life. And the third, what a character, he doesn't belong there. He's loud, full of life, goofy, child like, and always in their business; he's only in that space because of his sick father but, thank goodness he is, that little goof ball draws the other two out of their hiding places and out of their comfort zones and teaches them to live again. What a beautiful movie. I know I ...

  • really great story- great characters

This is one of my favorite movies which is why I had to purchase it! I feel movies these days have to be action packed (even if it's a drama or comedy). This movie is thoughtful and slow but so well written and such a great story. I absolutely love the characters. Bobby Cannavale is hysterical. He's this attractive macho kind of guy but the things he says... it goes against the stereotype that you would think he is. He adds those little nuances that just make his character so loveable. Patricia Clarkson is great in everything she does. I guess too what makes this movie great is the relationship between Bobby, Patricia and Peter Dinklage's characters. The unlikely friendships that they form. For me a plesant surprise was Michelle Williams. She did a really great job and prior to this I just ...

  • Short 'n Sweet

The Station Agent is a gem of a movie. It overcomes a premise that sounds a little mawkish and sentimental, and evokes genuine and well-earned emotion and laughter throughout its 90 minute running time. This movie is at heart a character study. All three leads are marvelous, creating intricate portraits of lonely people who grow and change because of the effect they have on one another. On the surface, it looks like a movie that is eminently skippable, one that’s been done 100 times before. Instead, it’s a unique work of art that leaves you walking away from it feeling good. It doesn’t get any better than that.
