This is one of the first Kindle Fire as these went all the way up to 10. This is the second generation which has 8gb of storage, but does not have a option for a micro sd card to expand the storage space. Given that, you can have a lot of books in your library, particularly if you use a program like Calibre which even converts epub or pdf to the Kindle mobi version. It is a good idea to keep your apps limited and use them on a laptop or tablet as they can eat up storage space. The Kindle uses it's own web browser, but you can switch to one of your choice like Chrome or other. In reading books on this device, I switched to a black background and larger text as that is easier for me, particularly for reading when in a unlit area. I have not tried to use the device out in the sun, but I would probably stick toi a dark page with white font. The device is heavier than my Barnes and Noble Nook, but I find it does not crash as often as the Nook HD; however, my Nook is quite old which is why I wanted to get an older kindle just to test the product out. I find that I like it so much I am planning on getting a newer version and gifting this device to someone who cannot pay for a Kindle and give them some of my books on it as well. I do recommend a Kindle and if you have to get an older model, such as this Kindle Fire, you will be pleased with your purchase.Read full review

1st generation is not as speedy and glossy as the newer 5th generation, but for what it is this device is excellent. And it's not expensive to get the port fixed like in the case of my purchase. A few extra dollars fixed it. Overall a good device for a book reader, but I would not use the 1st generation for a tablet.

amazing, I bought this for my wife who wanted a i pad but I could not afford to buy the i pad, so I started looking for a less expensive version. she just wanted a tablet platform that she could play her facebook games on and download the popular apps she wanted. at first this was discouraging as we bought multiple tablets and had to return them because either the android opperating system wouldnt play the games or some crazy platforms set up. finally we decided to give the kindle fire a shot, our last hope & when we got it we were impressed by the style of the kindle fire and the crystal clear touch screen it boasts. the gingerbread platform is easy to use and understand for the most part, the games play for the most part the only issue we have found is activating flash for one game. other than that we appreciate the fact that amazon or kindle fire has created a great tablet at a price someone can afford!!!!!! thx oh & if kindle is interested i believe my wife has come up with a good commercial for you ,Read full review
This is the first generation model of the Amazon Kindle Fire and since then, a lot has changed. What I loved about this model (compared to my Kindle Touch) is that it has a backlight (and I can read without the need of a light source), it has really good graphics and color, it is quite fast and it is organized for my own leisure. I also liked the way the page flips as if its a book, the way files are displayed (very friendly), the parental controls and the available free apps and games in the Kindle Store. What I don't like, however, is it is pretty heavy compared to my Kindle Touch or any other device I've had (apple products). The memory allocation is also too little as about 1 gb is allotted for apps and the rest is for books and other files. The limitation of having to purchase directly from Amazon is also a bummer, not to add the fact that there are not a lot, but of course it makes sense. I know I can purchase via the android market but then again, not all apps are kindle fire friendly and I am not going to risk it. I haven't tried to sync it via PC because I never had to with other devices. I manage everything online or through the web. Another bad point is there are times that apps or the browser crash or reset on their own - which is terrible, but then again, I don't expect to be able to do so much anyway. The device is pretty good as an ereader but anything else - not yet. Perhaps the latter models are a bit better, and perhaps with more time, this will pick up and more models are going to be available.Read full review
First off, I would like to say I got a very good deal on this leading me to purchase it sooner than I would have. That having been said, this is just the greatest little gadget little old retired me could have. I bought this primarily to use in the kitchen both for my entertainment while preparing lengthy meals as well as to use for recipes and other food prep and store instructions. I had tried using my laptop, but it was just too large to be of any real convenience. My Kindle Fire has become invaluable to me as an instant go to resource to keep handy as the perfect size on my counter as I work. I love the versatility it offers as I cook to seek extra instructions, listen to a book or finish a movie I had previously started. I plan to use it alongside my sewing and craft activities as well for personal online instructions as I work. What more could one possibly ask of a device such as this? The battery lasts a long time and takes me through any recipe, craft or sewing project I might need it for. Otherwise, I just plug it in at my counter or work space. The Kindle Fire just does anything you might want from instant instructions and tutoring to checking and returning email and browsing the internet. All wrapped up in a convenient 7" screen size. The only problem I've had is in creating messages for returning emails, but I believe that to be a glitch in the Gmail App and the screen can be a bit touchy. You would definitely not be disappointed in this as a purchase. I've found absolutely nothing not to like about it so far. :)Read full review
