Good aviation movie
I don't care for the lead actor, but his character was well played. Very insightful look in to Howard Hughes life. It's amazing he did as much as he did despite his mental issues. I've heard the movie leaned on that aspect of his life too much, rather than getting deeper in to other aspects, and I would concur. Kind of dull spots in the movie when your just watching him be crazy. But great aviation scenes, lots of technically accurate stuff.I don't care for the lead actor, but his character was well played. Excellent blu-ray transfer of an already remarkable movie!
Seeing "The Aviator" on blu-ray brings out even more detail in the sets and costumes, particularly for those worn by Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn and Kate Beckinsdale as Ava Gardner. Sets appear even more realistic such as the recreation of Hughes' "Hercules" aka "The Spruce Goose" as it is widely known today. Ironically, it is almost too much detail when it comes to seeing the gory makeup used on DiCaprio when he is finally able to free himself from his plane after it crashes in a Beverly Hills neighborhood. Later, as Hughes deteriorates more into paranoia and depression and he begins to isolate himself from the world, we can see the scar tissue on his body from that crash. This was a movie that was already impressive to watch on DVD, as one ... A very good transfer, both visually and in the audio department, (for ex, in every scene where planes are flying, and there are a lot of them, they can be heard whizzing not only from left to right but in the rear speakers as well. The sub woofer really kicks in when engines are revving up and in the plane crash sequences in the movie. Highly recommended!

Salinger, he was a big time stud, who made big movies, flew fast planes, and courted gorgeous ladies; so say Martin Scorsese and John Logan, architects of this latest Hollywood biopic.' Leonardo DiCaprio continues his trend of turning in great performances with great directors, playing Howard Hughes between 1927 and 1947, the years where Hughes conquered the worlds of film and aviation, making room for romance with Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett) and Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale). In later years, Hughes's mental problems would become legendary; at this stage in the game, he suffers only from pronounced germ phobia and mild obsessive-compulsive disorder. It couldn't have been easy to play an iconic movie star like Katharine Hepburn, but Blanchett aces it. Kate Beckinsale, Kelli Garner (Faith Demorgue), and Gwen Stefani (Jean Harlow) are the other women in Howard's life, although none are as clearly defined as Blanchett/Hepburn. The villains of the piece are Alec Baldwin and Alan Alda, playing, respectively, Pan-American Airways CEO Juan Trippe and Trippe's bought-and-paid-for politician, Senator Ralph Owen Brewster. Both excel, with Alda coming off as both slimy and goofy at the same time. Alec Baldwin, like Cate Blanchett, steals every scene he has, playing Trippe as a delightfully suave villain. In his final scene he delivers a wonderful monologue on the future of Hughes's Trans-World Airline, and caps it off with the most hysterical use of the F word in many years. Also appearing: the dependable John C. Reilly as Hughes's business manager Noah Dietrich; Jude Law, who apparently can't go two weeks without seeing himself in a different movie, as movie legend Errol Flynn; Brent Spiner (yay!) as airplane executive Robert Gross; and Willem Dafoe as a photographer. "The Aviator" is overlong, and drags in places, but it is a great movie.

Leo's the man in this epic tale of genius and madness. Baldwin is great as an opponent . Alda makes you bite your lip with his performance of Political greed and power struggle. Lovely cast of ladies,Cate Blanchett nails Hepburn, who would figure that HH would be such a ladies man ? Scorsese hits a home run with this tale. Great action and sounds. Just upgraded my amp and bd player to accept hdmi master audio and all its bells and whistles . Great story and action A+ .Leo's the man in this epic tale of genius and madness.
