MOODY BLUES: The Millelnnium Collection - just great!
I am not an enthusiastic rock 'n roll fan, but I'd always loved the Moody Blues song "Your Wildest Dreams" and liked "Nights in White Satin" and I wondered what else they'd done. Buying a "greatest hits" collection is always a good place to start when you're playing catchup with a group that's been around for more than 30 years. I found that their music is so beautiful and so complex that I had to listen to the album several times before I was able to absorb it all. The first time through I was attracted only to "I Know You're Out There Somewhere." When I listened to the album again, I was amazed to realize that they had successfully inserted a beautiful ballad as the middle sequence of a rock anthem ... I am not an enthusiastic rock 'n roll fan, but I'd always loved the Moody Blues song "Your Wildest Dreams" and liked "Nights in White Satin" and I wondered what else they'd done. Buying a "greatest hits" collection is always a good place to start when you're playing catchup with a group that's been around for more than 30 years. I found that their music is so beautiful and so complex that I had to listen to the album several times before I was able to absorb it all. The first time through I was attracted only to "I Know You're Out There Somewhere." When I listened to the album again, I was amazed to realize that they had successfully inserted a beautiful ballad as the middle sequence of a rock anthem ("Question") and that I really DID like "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band." After a few listens, I found I liked every song except for "Gemini Dream." Justin Hayward of the group is a brilliant songwriter. The Moodies also do something at the beginning and end of their songs that sounds like celestial music, and is totally arresting to hear. After I bought this album I discovered I had an old cassette tape of a 1991 concert the Moodies had done at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony. Hearing some of the same songs (and some others, as well) played for an audience is a different experience than studio tracks, of course, but their musicality is such that a full orchestra only enhances it, and the tape is a mind-blowing experience. This group came along a few years after their British compatriots, The Beatles, hit the headlines. I was never a big Beatles fan (most of what I do like of theirs was written by George Harrison) but in my opinion the Moody Blues were the true British Invasion. Three of the four are still together and still touring, but in England and Europe this year. If they ever come back to the U.S. I'd love to see them live. Listen and enjoy! -- Val
