A good looking toad, for the warts.
After it got to the point where I was paying nearly 100 bucks to refill my old HP printer, I decided, last Christmas, to break down and get the Kodak ESP 5 All in One Printer, and, in truth, I've now had two. As was the case with many of these, I've needed a new print head several times, but out of the box, the biggest problem I had with it was getting the back door panel to stay in place- it kept popping out of place. That printer inadvertently fell off my print stand due to a lot of rocking, another wart, and I acquired another one. This one seems to have no problem with the back door. It, too, needed a new print head, but I was able to use the one from my broken printer. Enough bloviating. The Good: -Pretty fast print speed for an all-in-one when printing photos -Good faithful color ... The Good: -Pretty fast print speed for an all-in-one when printing photos -Good faithful color representation when the print head is good (in fact that's the best way to tell when it's not) -Very reasonable ink prices -Very accommodating support from Kodak -Excellent scan clarity -Extremely easy to use- very few clicks needed. The Bad: -Ink runs out pretty fast despite the cheap price- it does hold up pretty well to the ads, but it doesn't go as far as you would think it should. -Print heads go bad often -Black print speed is a bit slow, but it is an all-in-one. The Ugly: -Kodak EasyShare software always says it needs to update to work and never successfully updates no matter how many times you say "yes" or reinstall. Doesn't seem to hurt anything but it's annoying. -The thing rocks like crazy if its not on a rock-solid stand -The paper retention arm in the front is horribly designed and has broken off on every example of this model that I've seen. Not a big deal, just annoying. -USB Print Cord seems a bit short. -1 of 2 examples I've owned have problems with the back paper-redirect door popping off or feeding the paper a little crooked. -Quite fragile when falling! All in all a good printer. As soon as my first one fell and was broken, I immediately sought another! And at this point, I don't see a better contender in the category considering the ink price! Overall grade C+ to B-, warts included.

Underestimated Printers
Before buying the printer I spent a lot of time reading reviews, going to retailers and getting opinions, and of course pricing like items. When you buy a printer one thing to look at is for the money you're going to spend how are all the printers in that price range rated, and for me, a printer in the $100 range will get you a rating of around 3 of 5. Once you look at it that this printer is rated as well as most in the price range, and you take into account that it does have a great ink cartridge price, it's a good brand name, Kodak has a wonderful kodak customer support line (I was an electronics manager for a number of years, had to call several times and they always went above and beyond). This is a great printer, bought it for a christmas present, hooked it up, works great, looks ... Kodak Esp-5 Printer
I've always love Kodak Products, Especially the Cameras. Reason I bought this Kodak ESP-5 thinking I would save on ink like kodak quoted. But, I've printed 10 4x6 photos and couple documents in black and white. Black I have 80% and 50% color ink left. So, it's already used 50% of the color. The ESP5 printer works great using memory card, usb cable from any camera, scan and copy. There is a very small problem that kodak needs to work on their software, firmware. If you print photo's from computer, it stops half way and just sits there. I have to cancel. For some reason I can't get the printer to restart. I have to restart computer to get printer online again. I follow all instructions twice setting up printer. Still does same thing when printer from computer. Using your camera's memory ... Wal-Mart you can get black for 9.95 and color for $14.95. I bought this ESP5 printer cause it was free shipping. I still think my Espon photo R280 is best printer I've ever had. It doesn't use much ink at all. I was going to get rid of Espon when I got kodak, guess I'll hold on to it for now. I don't think the printer is the problem, it's got to be Kodak's software and firmware for using printer with Vista operating system. I wish they come to my house to see what I'm going thru. Overall I like the kodak esp5 printer. I love the copy, scan operation, it works great with No problems. Sincerely, Todd

An Expert Review of the Kodak ESP.5
This product will probably do very well for beginners along with those with limited computer experience as this printer will make the decisions for you. This printer is very simple to use once installed. It has had a few glitches with Windows 7 compatibility but nothing that can't be resolved even by a new student. If I were a person that had limited computer experience this would be my primary printer. It's ease of use for scanning along with the good photo quality makes this printer a great choice for a printer you might need to do occassional print jobs. If you're not as computer savvy as you'd like to be, you can certainly make great looking photos for a beginner. Even as an old hand, I still find myself using this product on occassion. So, I'd say, if you're a beginner, I'd rate it ... Easy Peasey! They got it right!
My printer arrived will packaged for delivery. Everything was 100% on arrival. Following the step by step installation instructions were flawless. Never a question what to do next or how to do it. It does take about 20 minutes for all the software to load but once loaded your ready to rock and roll. User interface software is very simple and easy to understand even by the timid computer users (says my wife). Colors are great, picture printing made easy! This is an upgrade from the kodaic docking station so we can print 8 x 10s now. Scanning is smoth and easy to do as well. Have not used the fax function yet, haven't had the need to with scanning and emails, but I am sure it works fine. Replace the black when needed, and the 3 color packets are together as one unit, but this is understandable. All round good 5 in one printer for 'home' use.
