McMutry's "Lonesome Dove" has long been a favorite story and his way of telling stories is what keeps me coming back. "Streets of Laredo" is no exception. McMutry's storytelling is like one those friends of yours who wants to tell you about what happened today and to do so completely has to tell you about what happened to to all the other guys that helped their story come about. It's like creating your own little solar system where the author tells you about what's happening with all the other planets while something is happening to yours. Eventually these threads all intersect and when you step back, you see the pattern they've formed. OK, I'm fresh out of metaphors. If you liked "Lonesome Dove" you'll like this.
I love this book. This edition is amazing. It’s hardcover it’s got a beautiful dust jacket. Blah blah. Great value. McMurtry is a great writer that’s not a surprise. What’s great about this novel is that I honestly feel like McMurtry took a risk continuing the story with Call and especially Pea Eye. And it pays off. Let’s be honest: Gus is basically what makes Lonesome Dove work as well as it does and without him, a reader might have doubts about how a sequel could even work. And then the story follows: The completely emotionly vapid, not even dead or harder but just devoid of emotions: Woodrow Call and the loyal but slow... slowwww Pea Eye Parker? Let’s not forget Gus’s hilarious conversation regarding chasing buffalo which serves just to show how hilarious he was and how slow Pea actually is. But inspire of this: the story works. It’s beautiful. It’s dark and scary. It’s violent. It’s cruel. It’s full of triumphs and moments of overwhelming joy and pay off. There’s nothing forced or contrived. Characters of both sexes are strong and determined without pandering, (i only mention this because I know this is a thing with People now a days.) this is, honestly everything you’d expect/hope the sequel to the greatest Western ever, (yes I said it) would be. If you like Westerns buy lonesome dove and this. Hell you could even get away with reading this first but damn I’d feel bad for you because Lonesome dove is fucking perfect.Read full review
