About this product

Product Information

This compact, high ratio zoom lens was developed along with the EF28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens and is identical to it except that a DC motor is used instead of the USM for focusing. The optical and operational specifications are the same also. The silver ring at the front of the zoom ring presents high-quality appearance, and the optical system uses only environmentally friendly lead-free glass.

A great quality lens for the price.

I recently upgraded to a Canon full frame camera and needed an EF-mount lens. I wanted a good zoom range and didn't want to spend a lot of money on a high-end lens yet, so I bought this 28-200 mm USM lens. After reading reviews of this lens, I was a little leery about the quality. However, so far I've been very happy with it! The rotation of the barrel is smooth, and the quality of the photos is very good. I loaded the lens profile into my Canon camera and turned on Digital Lens Optimizer; now the camera can compensate for known deficiencies including chromatic aberration. The noise from the Ultrasonic Motor is noticeable, but tolerable. One thing I'm a little nervous about is that there is a slight amount of lateral play in the front part lens when fully retracted (28mm). I don't ...

Only worked for a short while

Telephoto stopped working and it will only zoom to 50mm. Very disappointing because I was unable to get the photos I wanted when I was up in the Eastern Sierra Nevadas this past summer.

  • If you can get a nice one for less than 150.00, do it.

Great starter lens for amatuer film photography. I'm using this on a Canon EOS 5/A2 35mm slr. Auto focus is quick, albeit noisy relative to today's latest dslr lenses. Manual focus ring isn't very smooth, but it's more than manageable. From the many reviews I've read, experts and professionals say this lens is crap - but they're comparing it to professional-level equipment that probably costs much, much more. Amateurs love this lens, and a few claim that it needs to be part of your amatuer Canon arsenal. I like not having to carry around 2-3 lenses, the ultra-sonic motor is fast, the lens gives good depths of field, and coupled with the VG-10 grip, gives my EOS a great feel. I'll be using this for all of my shooting, until I graduate college, get a job, and start earning an income ...

  • Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

Very nice lens. Bought it to replace an older 28-200mm EF lens. The EF-S matches the sensor coverage of my camera and most of the newer Canon cameras. The older 28-200mm lens used an ultrasonic motor for focusing. This lens does not use an ultrasonic motor which is surprising since most of Canons new lenses have this feature. The ultrasonic motor was much quicker on my old lens but this lens is pretty good. Also this lens has an image stabilizer which my older lens lacked. The stabilizer definitely improves image quality on slow shutter shots.

  • 18-200mm IS CAnon lens

Great portability for a single lens. Travelers will love this lens. It is compact and well balanced. The IS feature helps greatly in dim light shooting and allows me to shoot a slow speeds (while breathing is halted, of course, even at long focal lengths. The lens lock prevents lens creep when carrying in transit. It's close up feature, although not macro, was good enough to record from ~15 inches very nicely. Optically, not a Nikon equal but very close unless my so so UV filter compromises its resolution. You will love this lens reach! Hood for 28-135 is the same fits each so no need to purchase another is neat.
