What sounded like an intriguing story of love, betrayal, and murder ended up bizarre, disappointing, and disjointed. There wasn't much love between any of the members of the "love triangle," leaving the audience to create their own guesses on the characters' motives. The dialogue was shoddy, the scenes were often completely pointless, and not worth the effort to strain your ears to decipher the words on the badly recorded audio track. They seemed to have tried to make up for lack of plot by changing the actresses' outfit every ten minutes, even though the events only spanned a couple of days. Not much happens for the first 80 minutes of the movie, it just drags on and on through various costume changes and terrible weather effects in a failed attempt to create tension (ruined by the actors running out the door into clear weather, when just a second ago the rain lashed at the windows - an amazing feat of localized weather). This movie is a prime example of how brilliant actors and a large wardrobe cannot save a poorly written film that became even worse after editing. It seems all the interesting scenes showing interaction between Rickman and Reedus' characters were cut (there's one interesting picture of Rickman slapping Reedus' character on the back of the DVD cover that *wasn't in the movie*). In fact, it was as if *all* the interesting scenes of what could have been a pretty good movie about strange attractions and hidden motives ended up on the editing room floor and what's left for us to watch is the pointless filler bits sporadically sprinkled with plot. Is worth buying if you want to see Rickman and Reedus kiss, or just Rickman skinny dip.Read full review
Actually, my sphere of interest is antique state Russian share bonds and old prints. I bought this DVD for my wife, who is a little "mental" about Alan Rickman. Unfortunately, some of his films are unavailable in Russia. My wife's opinion: the film is a low budget psychological thriller. But the acting is good. Mr Rickman is superb, as usual. The plot is quite intriguing and the end is unexpected. But when you know the end it's even more interesting to watch. If you're more interested in the Actor than in all thrillers in the world, so I can recommend this film. As for me, I haven't seen it, to tell the truth...and not going to.
I bought this DVD because I'm a huge Alan Rickman fan-- a Rickmaniac, if you will. I own just about every movie he's ever made because I think he is one of the most talented, intelligent, sexy, and charming men on the planet, and every performance he's ever given is pure magic to watch. But I digress. At any rate, this movie has been an extremely painful thorn in my side because it was one the most sought after on my list, but virtually impossible to find. You couldn't buy it anywhere, no one could order it for you, etc. Finally, I found it here on eBay! Let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed. The movie was sexy, intriguing, and a bit of a thriller/mystery. Of course AR was amazing as well (as if he could ever make a bad film) but I have to say that the most rewarding part of all was FINALLY getting to see his nude scene at the very end. Meeoowww! I highly recommend it to any fellow Rickman fans. ;)Read full review
The two best things about this film are its low price and the fact that it features Alan Rickman, who is always enjoyable. In fact, he is the reason I bought the DVD. The script is so poor that I found myself wondering whether it was a house payment or a particularly high credit card bill that made him take the role. The worst thing about the script is its near-perfect ripoff of the plot of the first act of "Deathtrap" - I truly don't understand how they got away with it. But Rickman is a fine actor, and he gives even the worst product his best effort. I would recommend the film for "Rickmaniacs" only - and only if you get it at a low price.
I would like to start off by saying that I think that this is a wonderful movie. It is a bit of a mystery movie, you're trying to figure out how this young man plays into the plot. It is quite entertaining. You follow a married couple whos relationship is on the rocks. A young drifter boy then becomes the center of their attention during a vacation to their house in Maine. One of the keys to the movie is to pay attention to the small details. It leaves you guessing right up to the end as to why things turned out the way they did. Alan Rickman gets an A+ in my book, he is a wonderful actor. Norman Reedus did an amazing job as well, he had some humorous parts in this movie I give him an A++. It's a movie you'll want to see multiple times, I know I did.
