Notes
Remastered 1964 debut US album. With Beatlemania & the British invasion in full swing the band were announced as "England's Newest Hit Makers". Released to coincide with the Stones' arrival in New York City on June 1, 1964, where they began their first US tour. The band played to very small audiences in the eight cities. The track listing is the same as their eponymous first UK release except for their Buddy Holly cover of "Not Fade Away" replacing "Mona (I Need You Baby)". Keith Richards describing the album said it "reflected what we used to play at the Crawdaddy, a regular diet of Jimmy Reed, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters with some Slim Harpo. The album was the cream of the set." Mostly covers there is one Jagger/Richards original "Tell Me" & two group compositions under their nom de plume Nanker Phelge (including one co-write with Phil Spector). The album was recorded at Regent Sound in London mostly live in the studio.

    Surprisingly Good

This is surprisingly good. The Chuck Berry and blues influences are strong here. It's hard to sit still while listening to these songs, especially "Walking the Dog." The evolution of The Stones is fascinating, and this first Stones album is already more mature than any of The Beatles early albums. Nothing silly here.

  • Stones Debut Shows Their Roots

The Rolling Stones debut album isn't flashy, it isn't heavy, but it's cool. I enjoyed hearing this because they show us what influenced them and what they were comfortable playing when they were first formed, which is mainly blues. It's also cool to compare what they did on this album, and the next, and so on and watch how they've grown as a band. A lot of their earlier albums are a lot like this one, covering their blues favorites and mixing in an original or two. Highlights of the album are Not Fade Away, Route 66 (sound familiar? well if you have a kid and he made you buy Disney's Cars, it's in that movie, just not by the Stones), I Just Want To Make Love To You (sound familiar again? Foghat remade this one), Walking The Dog (Aerosmith remade this ...

  • Jagger and company's first effort

This is the Stones' first album, and it highlights their R&B roots. Every real fan of the band should give it a listen; bought it back in high school (vinyl) and wore it out. Loved it ever since and was tickled to find it on CD. As the Stones' popularity increased, the quality of their offerings decreased in my opinion. But there were notable exceptions: Sympathy for the Devil; Dead Flowers; You Can't Always Get What You Want, etc. But a lot of the other stuff sounded as though they were going through the motions (remember, this is one man's opinion). To be fair I must say that there has been no band consistently excellent and creative, not even the Beatles; they put out some schlock also. Such is the nature of any creative endeavor. Anyway, it is a great ...
