About this product

Product Information

This modern fantasy stars Anthony Hopkins as William Parrish, a wealthy New York City media mogul who suffers a heart attack on the eve of his 65th birthday; although he survives, he senses that his death is near. On the same day, Parrish's younger daughter, Susan (Claire Forlani), meets a handsome young stranger (Brad Pitt) at a neighboring coffee shop and is instantly smitten. As they part, the young stranger is killed and his body is occupied by Death, who is coming to Earth to warn Parrish that his death is, indeed, imminent. Death enters the Parrish household disguised as Joe Black, the handsome stranger, and although Parrish understands Death's intentions he lets the family believe that Joe Black is a young business associate. Susan is shocked to find the familiar young man at her family dinner that evening, and, as she begins a passionate love affair with the debonaire stranger, she has no idea that she has fallen not for the young stranger from the coffee shop but for Death himself. In an effort to prolong his life and his daughter's happiness, William agrees to take Joe on a tour of human life that includes board meetings, family parties, and, ultimately, romance. As long as Joe falls in love, Parrish remains alive. This version was inspired by the Alberto Casella play DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY and the subsequent 1934 film.

I always have difficulty in determining titles. So no comment. It is an acceptable title.

The body language self expression was amazing. Difficult task for any actor. Excellent performance. One would believe they were really truly in love in real life!!!

  • Lovely story, so worth the time

I like the 2 main actors, mainly. As for the contents, the movie was well written, interesting and had superb acting. A Hopkins shone, as always and the role was very befitting for him. B Pitt, as far as I am concerned, was at his absolute best. What a performance! He is versatile, yet, I still compliment him with the best work here. C Forlani was very likeable, but constantly looked away, when talking to people and that did not 'flow' with the story-line. A big hand to the sweet, bumbling son-in-law. I could not help, but liking him. All, in all, worth watching again (and again)

  • Peanut Butter

Meet Joe Black is a beautiful film with a talented cast. Because it is unique, the plot enables humor to be weaved within the dramatic and romantic elements. The music, composed by Thomas Newman (Shawshank Redemption, Erin Brokovich) truly enhances the movie. The many string and piano melodies are beautiful, and fit smoothly. There are so many memorable moments, like father-daughter conversations, and the scene in the coffee shop. Brad Pitt, in his portrayal of Death, displays naive and vulnerable feelings, skillfully in sharp contrast his behavior at the beginning of the film. While some criticize its length and unrealistic aspects of the plot, I found it to be so captivating and quite well-made. Meet Joe Black has an indescribable effect on me whenever I watch it. The story of Death being ...

  • A Must see film if you love Brad Pitt or if you love to cry .

This is such a great movie, I loved it the first time I saw it and was wanting to see it again, it had such touching scenes between Brad Pitt's Joe Black who was death, and the daughter of the man he was coming to claim, Anthony Hopkins. It looked like it was going to end badly, but through a twist of the plot, Death who had fallen in love with the young girl, made things right. There were several times when I felt deeply moved by Joe as death, when he discovers Peanut Butter, and when he realizes the depth of true love and when the viewer realizes how badly those in unbearable pain long for death. I think I may have seen this movie in a much earlier version called "DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY". This was a much better version than the earlier one. This is a must see film if you are a Brad ...
