I have another one of these for roasting beans at work. Makes the hangar smell good. Does a good job at roasting beans consistently. Perfect design to keep the beans moving and cycling.

These first generation West Bend The Poppery hot air corn poppers were the first consumer models on the market back in 1979 and sold for retail at about $ 30 in 1979 dollars, which was a good chunk of change back then. These units were manufactured in Hong Kong and are built like a proverbial tank. They work great and last forever if you take care of them. Due to consumer resistance of the high price point and marketplace competition after a couple of years West Bend brought out a lower price replacement model named The Poppery II with much much cheaper construction quality.

Although the machine heats up and technically works, it failed to get up enough to pop popcorn. I also tried green coffee beans (I roast my own coffee), and it ran for 25 mins and failed to reach the “first crack” stage. I have an ancient version of this same machine and wanted something a little newer. But this machine never got hot enough. A total waste of $50+.

Perfect for me. I use it to roast coffee and did not need the missing plastic top.
