I've only had a few days with this lens but I'm impressed. Images are as clean as you'd expect from a Canon L series lens, and the sharpness is excellent even at the extreme aperture (f22). For my needs this seems like an ideal lens. You never really know with a new lens until you've used it in a variety of conditions, but it seems like an excellent value so far.

Stunning images even at F1.4. Have notice that image result various when using different body. Somehow image quality various from lens to lens too. I have rented a similar lens which image is inferior as compared to the purchased lens. I have requested seller to send me a couple of photos taken at F1.4 to ensure that I am not getting a lemon. I am using the F2.0 version for quite a while. Decided to upgrade to this lens mainly for the bigger aperture as I am working indoor mostly. Colour attain is L class. I have compared two photos, one taken at F2.8 with the F2.0 lens and another at F2.0 with a F1.4 rented lens. At first glance, can't really tell distinct difference. But when zoom in 100%, sharpness, colour and clarity are a class or two better than the F2.0 version. Focusing is much responsive and rapid as compared to the F2.0 version. Get one if you can afford!Read full review
I bought the nifty fifty first because it was more affordable, but on an aps-c sensor, I found it to be a really awkward focal length. I wanted something wider and went back and forth for months before I chose to buy this one. Having only had it for a week, I can say that quality blows the 50 out of the water. It's super sharp and super fast. I love how much detail this can pull from the whole image including the shadows. Great lens! You won't regret it.

I tried many wide angle zooms with the 16 megapixel 1Ds Mark II but they never quite cut it for me. The Canon zooms in the tele range were quite quite good but the wides left a lot to be desired. Hence my search for good wide angle lenses. And this one will not let you down. Coz its a 1.4 , the viewfinder is very bright and the lens is easy to focus. Try doing a manual focus with a f 4-5.6 zoom lens to know the difference. It is surprisingly sharp @ f 1.4 And biting sharp from f 2 onwards. Very low vingetting and hardly any purple fringing or any chromatic abberations to mention. It is much superior to the Canon 24mm f 1.4, optic wise. Very good built quality. Must have for low / available light photography.
I have only had this lens for 1 week and I did a ton of research before my purchase. I have not been able to find ONE single person to say something bad about this lens(but I did find many lusting after it). I felt confident in my purchase and while recently switching to all primes, this was considered the #1 must have in a wedding photographers prime lens lineup(85L comes to mind as well) and now I can see why. Pricey? Yes. Sharp wide open? YES. Not many lenses you can say that about. At 1.4 it's like it's pulling in light from NOWHERE lol. Combine that with the clean high ISO of a 5dmark2 and you got yourself a winner. Great lens, can't want to use it some more.
