If you're a professional sports photographer, the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens may be right up your alley. This Canon lens will also be useful if you wish to get up close to shoot images of wildlife. The Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM has the range to put you right in the middle of the action with a maximum aperture that will let you use very fast shutter speeds. What's more, on sensor cameras of APS-C size, you’ll have the effect of using a 600-millimeter telephoto lens. This lens is part of the L series from Canon. These lenses use special optical technologies such as Ultra-low Dispersion UD glass, Super Low Dispersion glass, fluorite elements, and aspherical elements to push the optical envelope. As a result, the L-series lenses will give you outstanding image quality. You can expect great results when it comes to both color and contrast. In addition, distortion is negligible. With that type of performance, you can add a Canon EF 1.4x extender to the Canon 400-millimeter IS, and you will have a 560-millimeter f/4 IS focal length lens, which is fast for this particular telephoto type. When you pick up this 11.8-pound lens, you’ll feel the quality construction. It has a magnesium alloy barrel and gaskets to provide an effective seal in adverse weather conditions. It also has Canon’s built-in, two-stage stabilization system. This highly effective image stabilization will give you an extra four stops of steadiness. One additional feature of this IS system is that it senses when there is a tripod in use. As a result, it won't attempt to correct for motion that isn't there. What's more, there is a second IS setting that helps correct for extraneous panning motion by correcting on a single axis. The Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM has a tripod socket on the barrel, allowing you to balance the weight more effectively with your camera. The rotating collar lets you switch from a vertical to a horizontal photo without taking the lens off the mount. This telephoto is practically distortion-free, and the fluorine coating on the front and back elements help to protect it from both dust and pesky fingerprints. The autofocus speed is extremely fast, which is key for both sporting events and nature shots. The autofocus offers a mode to help you capture stationary objects and two different modes to catch moving subjects more effectively. It also has a three-position focus limiter that you can use to reduce “hunting”, which can become an issue when you’re trying to capture fast-moving action. This lens also includes a focus-preset feature. Set the focus preset to a specific distance and simply turn the white knurled playback ring on the end of the lens. That can be extraordinarily useful when shooting sports photos. Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens
I haven't taken that many photos with this yet and still plan to get down to the beach to capture both long board and short board surfers as well as looking forward to heading out to Vandenberg to chronicle rocket launches, perhaps some birding, and then some. What few photos I have taken seem to be very sharp and the lens is very responsive. My only concern is the weight. Definitely requires a good quality and stout tripod and/or maybe a gimbal head too? This was a pretty extreme purchase for me, but I have to admit that I've been curious for a long time about this lens. Maybe the II would be a little lighter, but I imagine it is pretty hefty in weight as well. I got this lens at what I consider a reasonable cost and hopefully will get my money's worth out of it, maybe even share it ... The EF400 2.8L II produces incredibly sharp images at any aperture. It is one generation prior to the current EF400mm f/2.8L IS USM. The high shutter speeds required for fast moving field sports makes Image Stabilization unnecessary. On an APS-H body, the 400 2.8L II gives you the 35mm equivalent of a 520mm focal length & by adding an EF1.4x II teleconverter, a 728mm with no apparent loss of image quality. Attached to a 1D4, the combination weighs just under 20 pounds. I would recommend the most stable platform available. I use a Benro C-458 EX tripod & Wimberly WH-101 gimbal head. The tripod's rated at 55 pounds and the gimbal balances the combination perfectly. The EF400mm f/2.8L II is one of the finest Sports & Wildlife lenses ever made. It produces incredibly ... Users of Canon's 70-200 f2.8 IS USM who photograph sporting events or wildlife subjects already appreciate the speed and clarity of Canon's f/2.8 L series lenses. If you haven't experienced the F/2.8 L series lenses, the benefit is awesome light gathering capability and spectacular shots with amazingly sharp subjects surrounded by nicely blurred background. Sure, flash is possible with lesser lenses, but you can't always count on your flash to give you the fill and lighting you really need, especially at longer subject distances, such as during baseball and football games at night under the lights. I love having the option to leave aperture wide open, have the exposure I need to stop the action, and set ISO such that flash is not a requirement, but rather a luxury. This is not always possible with the tele extenders. On the downside, this lens is heavy and it is expensive. Neither of these issues has proven to be a permanent wall between myself and this lens. The expense is what led me to first purchase the extenders. They're great, but just can't possibly replicate what this lens does alone. For that matter, nothing else can. I strongly considered the 300mm version of this lens as well. It costs less and weighs less, but doesn't have quite the reach. I reasoned if I were going to buy something in this class, I wanted the glass the professionals were using. Many reviews suggest this is the prime telephoto lens most often used by professionals. After much consideration of my needs, I opted for the 400. The price tag was initially a large lump to swallow, but I have not been disappointed. As a matter of fact, the cost is only an after thought now. I have no regrets or any guilt over the expense, thanks to the great capability of this lens and the results I have obtained thus far. Without a doubt it's heaviest lens I have owned. I've never attempted to freehand this lens nor do I have any desire to do so. I removed the stock foot and installed a Wimberly Arca Swiss style replacement. I'm using a Really Right Stuff monopod head and quick release clamp, and a Bogen/Manfrotto monopod. This is a great combination for quick set up, and easy handling in the field. On a tripod, I love the Wimberly Head II for safety and ease of handling. It's firm hold, balance, and two finger control are hard to beat.
