Don't hesitate to grab!
I was exited to see that these books still exist and that there's hope for ones who fell in love with the game or have yet to fall in love with the game. These books provide an excellent backstory to the PC games and it really makes it seem more immersive than just the games themselves. I have acutally owned the paperback versions of all three since they came out but never knew the hardcovers existed until a year or so ago. I still have one more to acquire though. This is a nice addition to any Myst fan's library and I highly recommend it. Although the copy I received here was not in the condition that I expected (I didn't want to return it as it really looked unread, but there were tears in the cover, so I did), I still managed to grab a copy somewhere else and I am so glad to have it. ... If you are reading this review, you are probably a fan of the MYST series. If so, then this book is for you. The story leads directly to the first game. The Book of Atrus is an enjoyable way to add to the mythology of the game(s). Just like the game, The Book of Atrus is hard to pin down into a genre. It's fantasy without dwarves and swords. It's sci-fi without spaceships and blasters. It's adventure without constant action. The story is interesting, and this book is probably my favorite of the trilogy. The writing is a bit difficult at times, but reading the story is well worth the effort. If it's within your budget, spend the extra money to get the Hardcover edition. Books are such a key part of the MYST mythology that having the large hard-bound book just seems to make sense. ... If you are reading this review, you are probably a fan of the MYST series. I first thought it was just a book written to make money, but when I saw the name of Rand Miller on the cover, I knew it was going to be excellent. I was even more surprised to see that it was not the adaptation of the game storyline, but a totally new story, counting Atrus's childhood. I'm french but I prefer readind the Myst books in english, because they are deeper without any translation. To conclude, I'd say that this book is a major one, and that it can be read by anyone who likes Myst, or likes great adventures.As a great Myst fan, I read this book many years ago. These are awesome books. Anyone who has ever played the games Myst and Riven will appreciate finally knowing the backstory behind them, backstory we only guessed at until now. Likewise, if you've never played the games reading the books gives nothing away, only a desire to know the rest, and play! Book of Atrus ends where the MYST game begins and Book of Ti'Ana is a prequel, describing the world of the D'Ni, allowing us to see it at last! The characters are believable, the plots superb. These books are as beautifully crafted as MYST itself.These are awesome books.
