About this product

Product Information

THE HULK, adapted by Ang Lee (CROUCHING TIGER/HIDDEN DRAGON, THE ICE STORM) from the Marvel comic book series, stars Eric Bana as Bruce Banner, the tormented scientist whose temper periodically transforms him into a raging green monster. Fellow scientist and Hulk-love-interest Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly), shares a strange connection with Banner--both have abstract childhood nightmares that hint at a shared dark past. The missing pieces of the puzzle are revealed when Banner's unstable, mad-scientist father David (Nick Nolte) appears out of the blue, followed by Betty's father Ross (Sam Elliot), a military cowboy. Banner is ultimately trying to understand what it is that makes his strange and unpredictable metamorphosis occur, while his outbursts distract him, leading him out into the streets of San Francisco, to the Golden Gate Bridge, and on a tour of the American west's national parks where he unleashes his anger in violent tantrums. Posing a threat to the country that is treated like a natural disaster, the hulk attracts the attention of the military. They respond by chasing the hulk with helicopters, machine guys, and even heavy artillery, as he bounds away in mighty leaps, trying to escape. The CGI work used in creating the hulk is funny and convincing, and the gorgeous landscape photography makes his presence all the more amazing. A vibrant color scheme adds to the film's visual thrills, split-screen editing breaks up the slower scenes, and the music by composer Danny Elfman perfectly punctuates the contrast between the soft love story and wild action sequences. While parts of the film recall the introspection of FRANKENSTEIN, the outrageous crowd-pleasing monster-military chases hearken back to KING KONG and the GODZILLA movies.

  • focuses on basic tenets of needs:anger, safety, love, fear

Not too far removed from his success with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Director Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Brokeback Mountain) couldn’t have chosen a more difficult undertaking than 2003’s box office disappointment—(based on how much they actually spent to make this film) The Hulk. Seriously, there really isn’t a lot of cinematic material to work with when it comes to a character such as The Hulk that usually focuses on the most basic tenets of needs such as: anger, safety, love, and fear. In addition, the concept of being gifted with seemingly unearthly strength but at the same time cursed with intelligence so feeble is sure to glue patrons of all ages in their seats. However, Lee may have taken this as a challenge and shook things up by doing away with The ...

  • Why the bad press? Confusion of reality vs. comic-dom

Despite the up and down nature of every other review I have seen of this movie, HULK really does what it claims it will do when telling the story of Bruce Banner and his transformation into that angry green beast of a man--the Hulk. I had a hard time understanding why Ebert and Roeper could give it two thumbs up and yet the movie did not make a "hit" with audiences say, like that web-slinging guy we all know about. However, HULK isn't Spiderman, it wasn't depicted in the same way, and for that I am thankful that all movies I have enjoyed do not have to be clones of one another. The actors' performances were solid, the "hinting" phrases ("you wouldn't like me when I'm angry") poking solidly at the precursor television show, and of course dramatic CGI effects made this movie as much of an ...

  • This Must Have Hurt for Big Hulk Fans!

I am not a big comics fan. I do like some of Stan Lee's work but not a big Hulk fan. I also have loved most of Ang Lee's work like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Sense and Sensibility and The Wedding Banquet. Whic is why I do not understand what went so horribly wrong? The actors are great - Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Nick Nolte, Sam Elliott. With Satn Lee writing and Ang Lee directing you would have thought - yes, a beautifully shot movie with sharp witty dialogue laced with sadness and sorrow. Instead we get CGI up the wazoo! I think CGI is great, don't get me wrong. But too much of a good thing is...well, Hulk. It overpowers the movie in that all you can think about is how much like CGI everything looks. Cannot recommend this film. Maybe if you are a really big fan of Hulk ...

  • Hulk (2006) HD DVD

The special effects are great and look way better on HD DVD. This movie made some serious headway in special effects when it came out! Think about it, the star of this movie is a computer animated character!
