Non-simplified kanji used
I'm interested in learning modern Japanese, but this book still uses non-simplified kanji. There's a gloss at the back that shows both versions of the affected kanji, but that was too little, too late. I really like the book, though. You will be able to read Japanese kanji at the end of it, but it might take you 2 or 3 read throughs. I'm on my second now.

I have always been fascinated with the Japanese language since going to Okinawa as an exchange student in 1993. I thought the characters would be impossible to learn or recgonize. However, this book clarifies, and really simplifies the characters in a way that is totally understandable. Overcome your fears of Japanese language
This won't make you a native speaker, but it will take the mystery out of Nihongo with its two alphabets and Chinese characters. I replaced the lost one I had "loaned" and purchased one for a friend. Very fun reading.
