My 9 year old re-reads it constantly
Louis Sachar has since become a really well known writer, but this series is from early in his career (apparently right after he became--or almost became--a lawyer). The series is silly and nonsensical--well, it does have its own skewed and wonderful logic--and hilarious. My younger daughter was not a big reader until she discovered the Wayside School books, and that did the trick.
