About this product

Product Information

"The kind of book Steinbeck might have written if he'd traveled with David Letterman." -- New York magazine An inspiring and hilarious account of one man's rediscovery of America and his search for the perfect small town. Following an urge to rediscover his youth, Bill Bryson left his native Des Moines, Iowa, in a journey that would take him across 38 states. Lucky for us, he brought a notebook. With a razor wit and a kind heart, Bryson serves up a colorful tale of boredom, kitsch, and beauty when you least expect it. From Times Square to the Mississippi River to Williamsburg, Virginia, Bryson's keen and hilarious search for the perfect American small town is a journey straight into the heart and soul of America.

Great book for those with little experiece in travel.

Very interesting description of towns, large and small. A lot of facts as well. I would certainly suggest Bryson's book be read by anyone wanting to know more about our country.

  • Terrific read -- possibly Bryson's best, and that's saying a lot!

"I come from Des Moines. Someone had to." What a great opening, especially for someone like me from the Hawkeye state. I have read this book at least a dozen times, and it never fails to make me laugh out loud. Bryson has a droll, self-deprecating humor that hits me where it counts each and every time. In addition, he has a wonderful use of language to bring anyplace he's been to to life with a richness and luster seldom seen outside an album of photographs. I have purchased his books in quantity over the years to share with others, and have yet to meet someone who doesn't fall in love with him the way that I did. He's definitely on the list of Top Ten People I would Like to Share a Latte With.

  • Get to know the US from a slightly different viewpoint

If you haven't read any of Bill Bryson's books, you may want to check this one out. While it doesn't flow for me the way some of his works do, it's thoroughly laced with humourous incidents and anecdotes in the style Bryson does so well. Bryson describes his travels through 30+ states with many funny, some thought-provoking, and some saddening detail. His interaction with numerous waiters/waitresses, motel clerks, gas station attendants, and others is bound to make you laugh out loud - while some of the people he sees, talks to, and observes will likely may you wonder if these people live in a time-warp, or why some areas lag so far behind what many of us take for granted as a "normal" social structure. Bryson's dismay at some peoples attitudes and beliefs, without dragging down the ...

  • Humor doesn't work.

The author uses derogatory language about small towns and their populations. The attempt at humor doesn't work.
