The display is useful at this size, anything less is really tough. The touchscreen is very easy to use and interface is intuitive. The features are excellent for the price point, turn by turn voice command, bluetooth for your cell phone, points of interest to find restaurants, gas etc., 3hr. Battery capability to take it out of the car if hiking or mount to your motorcycle or quad, voice active calling. The bluetooth was real easy to sync and it pulls up your phone list so you just turn it on and link it once, then every time you bring your phone in the car and turn on the GPS it's ready to push a button and say the name you want to call! Could use a larger selection of in-car mounts, The ability to leave "bread crumbs" to back track your trail, audio apparantly sounds a little distorted to those listening to you thru the bluetooth connection.Read full review
Let's get honest, I can get lost in my own backyard. Zero sense of direction so a GPS was something I have always wanted without paying monthly on my little cell screen. A friend had bought this model and really liked it for $400 new. Ebay gave me lots of options- new and used- under $200. I got mine slightly used for just over $100. Works fine. Likes: Finally, an affordable navigation tool! You can program and save your home and other destinations and it talks to you. If you choose another route, the Garmin automatically adjusts to your route. The satellite works quickly and effectively. Garmin rarely gets the route wrong- like some GPS systems. You can download map updates through mygarmin.com Need your UBS cord for this and a computer. It has a trip planner and also will calculate your mileage and gas useage. Dislikes: the dashboard attachment doesn't work in my car so it sits in my lap. The cigarette lighter cord broke so have a spare. Get a screen protector for the screen will scratch. My next GPS will have a voice recognition so I can tell it where to go and not have to stop and plug in a destinatin address that I may not have with me. But overall, for the price and quality, I am a satisfied customer. Garmin 1490T gets great reviews by consumers and critics.Read full review
I bought a GPS because my wife gets lost and panics. This one looked real good with the best price at the time. I like the direction to correct lanes on highways. Have not had time to try all the features. We had one problem with this unit. It has problems working with my wife's and my bluetooth cell phones. Both phones are supposed to be compatible. Garmin Support has been very helpful and decided to replace the unit with another brand new one. It has been easy to upgrade the "firmware" and you get one free map upgrade which was easy to do also. Assuming the replacement unit works with our bluetooth phones, this is a great gps in the low $200's. bright clear screen.
Since this was an old unit and may not have been used for quite a while there were some problems. I wouldn't charge at first but eventually did. Had much trouble downloading new maps and updates. But got working now and quite happy with it. Has a lot of features that my previous one did not have. Like that I can keep track of gas mileage and other things.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
Had a rough start with my unit. It took a few hours to download and install the updates, then it took about 5 minutes to find satellites for the first several startups. It seems to be settled in now and is up and running in about 15 seconds with no issues for guidance. I needed to use it that day and hadn't planned on so much effort to use the unit. I've become accustomed to the Alpine-based Navigation systems in my vehicles and this doesn't compare to them at all. But, a $100-ish unit shouldn't be able to compare to a $1500+ unit. People should realize that when they buy handheld units like this - it isn't going to be as good, fast, or precise as a completely installed system. HOWEVER, having said that, this is one of the better units available. It's easy to use, gets me where I'm going, and the screen is bright with a great display of the map/route. The voice alerts are clear and it uses street names. Upcoming turns are given well in advance. The layout is easy to follow and can be customized (take the time to read the manual). The touchscreen is adequate and does the job. It's large and has a wide viewing area. There's a good list of POIs and re-routes are calculated quickly. Overall, it does what it's supposed to do. It's not perfect, but it really is a very good unit. Everyone I've recommended it to has also loved the unit.Read full review
