  • Magellan eXplorist 300 GPS = for the real world

I bought my 300 to take to combat. I am leaving shortly for a combat tour in Afghanistan. This model was recommended to me by men who had gone before and knew what it takes to operate in such an extreme environment. This model has the battery type that is easily resupplied in-country. The features are exactly was is needed in the area of operation and can operate at extreme altitudes and temperatures. I will be using my 300 to call in air strikes and artillery strikes on Taliban and ACF units, I think it can be used for a short hike in the woods stateside. I can provide more details when I get back, but all is good as I go forward. If you have additional questions, leave me a question and I will check my email every couple of weeks.

  • Magellan eXplorist 300

I recieved this as a gift and intially fell in love with it. But after using it a bit, I found it was a middle of the road GPS unit. It fits nicely in the palm of your hand and is rather durable as all of the eXplorist models are. This unit is not rechargable, and has a battery life of around 18 hours. It comes ready to roll, with only a few minutes needed to set it up. I found after using it while driving, it will sort of stray off the actual highways you are driving on, so I think the accuracy is not quite what they claim. You can zoom in quite a bit, and I think it gets down to 250 foot intervals on the screen. It has an orange backlight that works pretty well. The buttons and 'joystick' button are pretty easy to use and are quite easy to navigate with. It also is a portable weather ...

  • Good budget GPS, low on useful features.

I got this as a backup for my eXplorist 210. I should have just gotten another 210. The 300 does not have a data port, requiring you to enter coordinates by hand, and removing the ability to power the unit externally. The included Barometer is inaccurate unless you set it manually, but if you have at least 4 GPS Sat signals, it's not needed (I regularly have 7-9). Also, the compass is always off by 5-10 degrees. The only thing that seems to work as advertised is the thermometer, but I can tell if I'm cold or hot, so that's not really useful either. I like that it doesn't use a rechargeable battery...if you need more power, just pop in a pair of AA's. It's a great GPS if all you're doing is marking waypoints, but if you need a GPS for Geocaching, or to find specific coordinates, get ...

  • Basic GPS - fine make !

I looked for a low price Handheld GPS that would be water resistant (for kayaking) and would use standard batteries (2xAA). The eXplorist300 has it all. very strong and accurate reception (incl. WAAS and ENGOS). The only thing that would make it perfect is a PC port to down load data into navigation software. Light weight, simple to use with basic features. recommended.

  • Works well in the open but not in the woods.

I bought this item primarily for throwing in my hunting pack as an aid in navigation. I am a good woodsman but when trying to connect the dots in some of Idaho's rugged wilderness area's a gps is handy. The biggest issues that I have with this unit is that when you are in the timber and I don't even mean heavy timber it takes quite a while to locate satelites for navigation. It also takes some time when you are not out in the wide open in getting the gps oriented to allow you to tell you the actual factuals as to preplotted locations as I found myself more than once relying on instinct and coming out where I wanted to when the gps was sending me in a similar direction but would have put me way off my plotted point. I realize terrain has alot to do with gps performance but I have never ...
