Excellent gps for those with patience.

I very much enjoy my triton 500. I have read a lot of bad reviews on the Triton but it works perfectly for atv trail riding and geocaching. The software for pc programming is a bit clunky but workable and it gets location fast. This is a device for people willing to learn how to use because it does take some patience. I would take my 500 over my 1500 unit any day of the week.

Do Not Buy Today Unless You Are a Geek

OK- as a GPS, nice quality, nice screen, nice value. Works real well after a firmware update. Great reception etc. Good receiver. Problem lies with software. Nat Geo scrapped its topo maps. No support. The software packed with the GPS is ancient and not updated. Only partially works with Windows 7-10 64 bit. You can download the latest firmware from several sources. Just Google it. All this means if you have an ancient computer laying around - its a great deal. To lay in useful newer topographic maps - since everything was discontinued 3 years ago - you have to do a work around using a paid subscription to a questionable site called Maps4Me. Down load - and save them as imi files and copy on to your SD disk. Not the 512mb that comes with it - too small - to my surprise the 400 ran a ...

  • Great value, can't beat it.

Just bought this little unit as an entry level GPS and what a great value for the price. It doesn't have all the new bells and whistles but with Magellan Vantage Point software is easy to use and I've already been able to get my kids out Geocaching with it. Very accurate, waterproof and light. The only gripe I have is I bought the Unit with the Adventure Pack which included National Geographics TOPO! Explorer software which was supposed to include TOPO maps but Nat Geo no longer fully supports TOPO Explorer. However, you can still download 7.5 minute topo Nat Geo maps through the Vantage Point software but you need a subscription for $30 a year. Removable SD cards mean you can load lots of maps and the back track feature rocks. Overall great value for the price and I don't have to worry ...

  • Easy to use............ once you learn how.

For the most part, I like this unit. It works well for what I need, but the text size is too small for the older users. The menu system on the old explorist 500 series was easier to navigate through, and downloading programs can be extremely tricky without step by step instructions. UNDER NO CICUMSTANCES PUT AN SD CARD FROM ANOTHER UNIT INTO YOURS, YOU WILL FRY BOTH UNITS AND HAVE TO HAVE THEM REPLACED! The SD Cards are serial number coded for each unit and will be reformated if put into a new unit. We also found out that it is best to always have fresh batteries in the unit before you download updates or maps. If the unit powers off during this process, the software crashes (we fried 7 units between these problems). The pedometer has come in very handy when going for evening walks ...

  • You better be IT and GPS savvy to run this unit

If you own a Windows 7 Operating System BEWARE. I work in IT and I had the biggest nightmare trying to get this gps to communicate. This gps is definitely for IT savvy people. The gps communicates via USB to COM port. This causes a major conflict in Windows 7 which will blue screen it and fail to transfer data. After 24 hours of beating my head on the wall, I traded my windows 7 for windows xp service pack 3. Reinstalled the software and got it running. If you go this route make sure your video card driver can handle it or you will get an ActiveX Object Cannot Be Installed error when you open VantagePoint(Magellan Software) The features of this thing are great, the price is great, the tech support is TERRIBLE.
