About this product

Product Information

Robert Towne's bio-pic about the legendary long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine. The picture follows Pre's Oregon upbringing, through his days at Oregon University (where he met and worked with famed running coach Bill Bowerman), through the Munich Olympics. Sadly, his career was cut short at the age of twenty-four when he was killed in a car accident, adding to the myth of this talented, inspired athlete.

Great portrayal of the legend of Prefontaine

Excellent telling of Prefontaine's brief life. It helps greatly that Billy Crudup actually looks like a runner. While more for runners or those interested in sports, the link to Olympics and the drama of dealing with the international politics of athletics should draw interest from other viewers as well. Donald Sutherland has a great portrayal of Bill Bowerman as well.

  • Track and Cross Country Family review of Without Limits

My daughter is one of the best track and cross country runners in northern Kentucky and Ohio. We love movies like this, It inspirational for her. Without Limits" is less interested in the politics and the crusade, and sees Pre more in personal, psychological terms. I prefer the earlier approach, which contains more information about why Pre is important even today. Robert Towne's affecting "Personal Best" (1982) told the story of a talented woman runner in terms of both her sport and her romantic involvement with another woman athlete; Prefontaine is more interesting as a public figure than a private one. This is more a conventional sports movie, but it benefits by giving more attention to the relationship between Pre and Bowerman and Sutherland's performance is the film's was ...

  • Which is the better "Prefontaine" movie?

Without question...Without Limits is the better of the two most recent movies about the American runner from Coos Bay, then University of Oregon runner Steve Prefontaine. The other movie in question is "Prefontaine". Both movies have merit, but for those of us born and raised in Oregon, and who know the people involved in the making of the movie, there is no question. Without Limits did things right, they contacted the people that actually ran with Pre. Kenny Moore, Steve Bence and even had feedback from Bowerman himself. This movie was directed by Tom Cruise and Warner Brothers. It is a good movie, very realistic, and shot in most of the same places where Pre actually ran. If it's my money, I would buy Without Limits. You won't be dissapointed.

  • Amazing film

I loved this film and I cannot understand why it didn't get wider play and acclaim at the box office. Admittedly, I am a runner, but I think this film would appeal to all audiences. It is an amazingly faithful portrayal of America's greatest runner, Steve Prefontaine, who was also a fascinating human being. Some may be turned off by his cockiness at the beginning, but as he gets knocked down personally and on the track, you learn there is more to Pre than just his cockiness. Furthermore, you learn that there is a respectability about his cockiness ... a strength and belief in a duty to himself to give every ounce of strength and determination in every race. This is what Prefontain is all about. Donald Sutherland's portrayal of Bowerman, Pre's coach, is memorable also. I still can't ...

  • Great story of real life people and their highs and lows
