The Rolls VP29 phono stage is a great little gadget. Works very well with moving magnet (MM) type cartridges. It is not meant for the more expensive, and sensitive, moving coil (MC) type cartridges. For those of us that have pre-amps or receivers lacking a decent phono stage, this one is very good for not a lot of money. Don't get me wrong, it is not a top of the line by any means, but for around $50 it does the job, and does it well. It has a better phono stage than my Denon receiver. You can run RC audio cables directly from the Rolls to your PC sound card to rip your vinyl onto the hard drive or copy to CDs. There is also a headphone jack that allows you to audit the records without the turn table being hooked up to anything else. This has become a very handy feature for me. Too bad there is no volume adjustment on the headphone jack. The Rolls has a well deserved reputation for causing 60Hz humm in your audio system. Folks have complained many times that the Rolls works just fine for a while, then the intermittent humm sets in and is almost impossible to get rid of no matter how much re-grounding is done between components of the sound system. Most of the time the cause is a breakdown of the little wall-wart 12V power supply that Rolls sells with the unit. Replace it with a cheap AC/DC 12-14v power supply. Just about anything you can find is going to be better than the one Rolls supplied. When mine started to cause very loud humming it was replace with another 12V wall-wart that completely stopped the irritating noise. Put a voltage tester on the old Rolls power supply and got a reading of 19.6 vDC! Summary: - Great value for the cost, even with getting another PS from Radio Shack, or on eBay. - Very small footprint, can be placed just about anywhere. - Handy headphone jack. - Very easy to hook up to any sound card with audio in jacks. - Lets you start spinning your old vinyl again with a minimum of hassle and $$.Read full review
What an awesome product. I tried a mid-price Pro-Ject and the hum was so bad I trashed it. I went with a Pyle that was about the same price as the Pro-Ject and it performed admirably, just lacked the detail I was looking for. I read the reviews about this inexpensive Rolls and thought I would give it a try. All I can say honestly is WOW! This thing sounds amazing, clean, detailed, excellent separation and absolutely no unwanted hum or noise. This is a great product.

Purchased so I could use my vintage Technics turntable with a new home theater amp that didn't have a phono input. My old vinyl sounds better than ever!

This preamp is absolutely excellent quality. It’s hard to mess up a metal box, but every part, even the paint is superb. The sound quality is fantastic and perfectly hits the RIAA EQ curve. The boost given to the line level is exceptional but extremely clean and free of noise. Using this with my headphone amp produced was noise-free with an excellent signal boost. In many cases I need my headphone amp at about 40-50% to get a moderately loud listening volume. With this preamp I ran it at about 15-20% for the same, but cleaner level. Even at near max I noticed no distortion or signal variance (the EQ curve seemed consistent at all levels). The quality at this price for an American-made phono preamp is simply impossible to beat. A note on the connectors: The RCA inputs and outputs as well as the 1/8 inch headphone jack are very snug, which makes for a solid and secure connection. They are also gold plated, which is a nice bonus. The ground connection is relatively large and will accept at least a 10 AWG wire diameter, making for a very solid ground. I recommend a twisted pair of 14 AWG which will also cancel ambient radio signals. Highly recommended.Read full review

This is a wonderful first pre amp for my daughters' venture into a beginners' turntable setup. She is very pleased with the small foot print and the quality of sound. This is a big upgrade over the phono pre amp built into her receiver. It performs very well at what it's supposed to do. Play back records smoothly with enough volume to play at a high level without hum and buzzing.
