About this product

Product Information

Tommy Lee Jones takes his second turn in the director's chair with THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA, the follow-up to his 1995 western THE GOOD OLD BOYS. The action takes place on the border between West Texas and Northern Chihuahua in Mexico, which is a hot spot for illegal crossings. But Jones's movie ingeniously flips this dangerous yet all-too-common practice on its head, with a tale of a man hell-bent on crossing the border in the opposite direction. The journey to Mexico begins when Pete Perkins (Jones) uncovers the identity of a Border Patrolman, Mike Norton (Barry Pepper), who has shot and killed his best friend, Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cedillo). Kidnapping Norton and forcing him to dig up Estrada's body, Perkins straps the corpse to a horse, and informs Norton that he will be traveling with them to Mexico. Once there, they will bury Estrada according to instructions he gave Perkins prior to his death. Jones paints Norton as a mean-spirited individual; caught up in a loveless relationship with his wife, Lou Ann (January Jones), Norton's day job frequently involves him him either exploding in a violent rage or idly masturbating over a well-thumbed copy of Hustler. The two men don't exactly bond on their journey, the wedge that's been forced between them being far too great for them to reconcile their differences. But Jones coerces a riveting tale from Guillermo Arriaga script, with a choppy chronology reminiscent of Arriaga's own 21 GRAMS. Comparisons to Sam Peckinpah's masterfully bleak 1974 movie BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA are inevitable, although Jones's film has a tender edge that Peckinpah's nihilistic epic was never quite capable of reaching. A film that suggests Jones has a bright future ahead of him as a director, THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA is one of the most absorbing pieces of cinema to emerge in 2005.

    "Decent cinema"

With the talents of veteran actor Tommy Lee Jones, the well seasoned Melissa Leo combined with the allure of a young January Jones as eye candy and the comedic relief of Dwight Yoakum against the back drop of the Texas/Mexico border one has a very watchable and entertaining movie! Levon Helm of course is fantastic.

  • a good movie about friendship & honor, poverty, a 4+

In light of recent disturbing plans of George W.- such as erecting a fence to keep out our southern neighbors- it would be a good idea to re-release it now. I know George W. Lives in the hill country of Texas but I know he has never tried walking in Texas heat to try to save his family from poverty. It is common knowledge that the border environment itself is prohibitive in itself to travel as many people die traveling in the harsh desert border. The border patrol is at the border to try to keep illegal immigrants out, yet it has been known to eliminate illegal immigrants and has been caught in the act, so it does not surprise me to see Tommy Lee Jones make a movie concerning this subject. It was a good movie that was about friendship and honor, about prejudice and the differences in ...

  • bit tricky, but digs deep within and is suspenseful

i wasn't sure what to expect about this film (and i thought i'd like it a little more than i did), but this film is still very good. its about an illegal alien who dies, and has a good friend who wants to do right by him, but is prevented by the powers that be because he is an illegal. some of the film is rather shocking and completely unlike anything. its one of those films that you can't step away from without thinking about it, and may take 2 or 3 viewings to truly get and appreciate, but its worth the effort. there is a bit of a twist ending, in that it really makes you wonder, but overall, its a rather good flick. I give it a "good" rating because its so different and the acting was done rather well, but it was a bit difficult to get through too (especially at the beginning, but ...

  • Disturbing on every level...Must See!

Set in the Texas/ Mexican border area, a texan develops a friendhip with an illegal Mexican immigrant, Melquiades Estrada. Estrada tells the Texan (Tommy Lee Jones) of his life and family in Mexico and makes him promise to bury him in Mexico in his home town if he should die. Well, see the title, The Three Burials of Melaquiades Estrada. Estrada does die in a violent fashion. The Texan makes good on his promise but never imagined where the journey would lead him. This movie is not for the young or faint of heart. It has some very disturbing scenes and the inner workings of the plot are twisted. It is a movie that you have to pay attention to...but it is well worth the effort.

  • Three Burials of Melquides Estrada

This is an excellent, thought provoking movie which brings to light the differences in cultures between Americans, who all too frequently take ourselves too seriously and our relative good fortune for granted, as opposed to the Mexican culture, where the people may be poverty struck but the way they treat each other as well as strangers is a stark contrast. The movie is not for those who are faint of heart, there are sosme very disturbing scenes, and a lot of profanity. However, this movie has affected me in a way such that I keep wanting to go back and see how the characters are doing now- then I remember it's only a movie. I am sure it is pretty close to reality for many of the people in desparate situations that we can barely comprehend. I thought the acting was good, especially Tommy ...
