About this product

Product Information

On April 24, 1915, Grigoris Balakian was arrested along with some 250 other leaders of Constantinople's Armenian community. It was the beginning of the Ottoman Empire's systematic attempt to eliminate the Armenian people from Turkey--a campaign that continued through World War I and the fall of the empire. Over the next four years, Balakian would bear witness to a seemingly endless caravan of blood, surviving to recount his miraculous escape and expose the atrocities that led to over a million deaths. Armenian Golgotha is Balakian's devastating eyewitness account--a haunting reminder of the first modern genocide and a controversial historical document that is destined to become a classic of survivor literature.

His writing is clear and compelling, as rendered in sensitive translation.  He has a keen sense of history, and his extensive travels enable him to record a tragic European panorama. This book will become a classic, both for its depiction of a much denied genocide and its humane and brilliant witness to what human beings can endure and overcome." - Robert Jay Lifton, author ofThe Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide, "A fascinating first-hand testimony to a monumental crime." -The New Yorker   "Gripping. . . . I am very pleased with the price of this new book (the lowest I found). I'm happy with the prompt shipping. The only problem was that the box was damaged during shipping. The new book itself sustained very minor cosmetic damage, no doubt from rough handling. The seller offered to send me a return label at no cost, which I do appreciate. However, I was able to repair the slight damage very easily. Thanks again for your concern.
