I bought this music player to use as a digital jukebox. I have a large music collection and primarily listen to playlists. My first attempt to use the player was to load a 1300 song M3U playlist from Musicmatch Jukebox. This was very frustrating because you are limited to Usb 1.0 speed (very slow) if you use any method other than the Gigabeat Room software to load the player. It also would error out and quit for any number of reasons during download and never tell you why. After a week of this, I loaded the Gigabeat Room software and found that it did not recognize standard M3U playlists. Now I have to rekey all my playlists in Gigabeat room manually. I did go to the trouble of rekeying one playlist to try. It also errored out but at least Gigabeat Room would tell you why. As it turns out, this player rejects any copyrighted material when it goes through the encryption process. Yes, it encrypts your music as it loads it onto the player. Copyrighted music may be as much as half ( or more ) of your collection. Windows does not recognize the device as a disk drive so you cannot copy files directly to it. This player is more about roadblocks than it is about playing music. I was about to resell the player and buy a Zen Touch when I discovered Rockbox on the internet. Rockbox is an open source operating system that you can download and install on the Toshiba F40 and many other players. With the Rockbox operating system the F40 now appears as a drive to your PC. Download errors are gone. High speed Usb 2.0 downloads. Excellent playlisting capabilities with your existing M3U playlists. I'm rating the Toshiba F40 as below average with the factory firmware/operating system. If you are computer proficient and willing to replace the Toshiba operating system with the Rockbox operating system then you will have a good solid player with a good to excellent rating.Read full review
If you're looking for plenty of room for all your songs and pictures, ease of use, a long battery life and high quality sound in a portable MP3 look no further! Boasting of a 40GB Hard Drive, 16 hrs of battery life on a single charge, ease of use menus and touch sensitive controls; the Toshiba Gigabeat just can't be beat. These MP3s are top notch for the dollar. The sound quality is very impressive it's almost like being in the recording studio...no kidding! With the included earphones remote you can turn it on and off, forward, reverse, skip and adjust volume while the main unit is safely tucked away in your shirt pocket or arm band (not included but recommended if you like to work out to your music). There are also silicone protective cases "Skins" available but beware that some do not come with the screen protector, which is important if you want to shield the LCD screen as well. These "skins" work very well in protecting the unit. There are leather cases also available and these can really dress up your Gigabeat as well as protect it. These units are a must have if you're looking to store massive quantities of music and picture files. It's no wonder that the Gigabeat delivers just what it promises up to 10,000 songs capacity and hours upon hours of enjoyment on a single charge using the included power supply and/or the cradle which can also rip your favorite CDs straight to the Gigabeat at the touch of a button...Wow, very impressive!!! The sharp LCD delivers high quality crisp picture resolution that aches for video capability. Unfortunately though you can only view slide style presentations, which you can program, with your music if you so desire. These units also allow you to choose your language (many offered) the default is English. Don't worry about falling asleep while listening to your Gigabeat. You can program it to play and turn off at the time you set it for and it also has a wake up feature. Additional features allow you to turn off the LCD at a set time to save even more on battery life. It remembers the song you were listening to when you turn off the unit and turns right back to that song when you power up again. This is standard for most MP3s now a days. There are wallpaper options, programmable functions and more. Let me tell you what, all of my family is asking me for these beauties...including those that were faithful to the other major MP3 maker (yeah, apple...something). I'm having a hard time keeping up with the demand and now the word is getting out to my friends etc. and they want them too. This is serious music capacity we're talking about here friends! Yeah, the other guys can't touch the Gigabeat!!! The included software (Gigabeat Room) takes a little while to get used to but once you do, it allows you to easily download and rip your favorite music right to your Gigabeat. The only downside to loading music files to your Gigabeat is that they are converted to a proprietary SAT format and if copied/transferred back to your PC or other MP3 they are not recognized and cannot be played using media player; you must use Gigabeat Room from your PC to do so while connected to the Gigabeat. Other than that I think Toshiba has done it again! In my opinion this is the best high capacity MP3 for the buck in the market. The refurbished units are a great bang for your dollar. A highly recommended must have quality portable audio MP3! So what are you still doing sitting there? Place your bids friends!!!Read full review
I am 67 years old and wanted to store and play some favorite songs, tunes, and narrations. I selected a bebuilt MP# player rather than the IPOD because of the ease of obtaining and using original works (and not paying the high royalties). I had to send tyhe original back after three weeks because it malfunctioned. The replacemant worked off and on with selection problems. The company offered to refund my money, but I decided to give them a second chance at replacement so sent the second unit in on Wednesday. When the unit is working it is excellent. But dependability apparently is an issue. Will give the product an average grade, but the vendor has been most cooperative. Ben Day
I still play RockBox DOOM on this player everyday for the last 5 years always fresh with 30 + Doom Games loaded on the player. She's not that pretty but Good quality from Toshiba - holds a lot of music, pics, video 80+ Games with RockBox. To bad the Apple and SMT phones killed most MP3 Player Companies what a shame...good by Toshiba, Creative Labs, Rio and so on....Sad.
Verified purchase: Yes
I originally bought my husband a 20 mg Toshiba Gigabeat 2 years ago. A few weeks ago, our car was broken into, and the Gigabeat was one of the things stolen. With the insurance money, we could have purchased a different kind of mp3 player; however, my husband wanted another Gigabeat PRONTO! I have an ipod, and I like his much better. In fact, I kinda wish mine had been in the car so I could get a Gigabeat! It is sturdy, sleek, colorful, easy to use, and holds a TON of music, pics, etc. The only thing I would rate less than excellent is the software. I am fairly computer-proficient, and the program took a little while for me to figure out. Other than that, it's awesome!!!
