Box is OK and will work for some applications, but has only automatic scaling and will not play nice with some combinations. Notably a 2005 Pioneer plasma TV and a newer Roku box would not work together, since the Roku would output 1080p and the Pioneer TV only supported 720p/1080i. It would probably be fine in applications where you can natively control resolution like a computer or game console, or if your display is 1080p and somehow has no HDMI or broken HDMI.
