Timeless advice for preserving your wealth in inflation
This 1980 book is written from the perspective of the Austrian school of economics. It is written at the end of the 1970's era of inflation, going off the gold standard, and energy "crisis". At a time of high unemployment & inflation, many saw the high interest rates as real gain and others saw the high inflation rate and knew the dollar would not buy as much in the future. This book correctly identifies the problem, not only for then, but for all economies everywhere with a fiat currency. What differentiates the Alpha Strategy is that it introduces clever analysis and technique to a prioritized list of what to do to preserve your wealth when the government is debasing your dollars. If you are already very informed of the Austrian economics, you can practically skip the first half of the book, and just read the part 2, "The Solution" and gain nearly as much benefit as having read the whole book. Technology has a way of dating material, and even though the examples may cause a smile, Pugsley incorporates the changing face of technology into his strategy so that you are preserving your wealth in that area too. You just apply this strategy to your current time. Overall I was very glad I read this book, and though I will not use this strategy as the exclusive way to preserve wealth, it certainly has influenced how I see and prioritize these methods. And Pubsley, like every other human who has a belief system, pushes his in the final chapter. It does not detract from the actual alpha strategy. In a time & place when every investment seems risky, is going in the wrong direction, and inflation is looming or zooming, this book has good information to make the best of your wealth.
