Mario Bava, (BLOOD AND BLACK LACE, BAY OF BLOOD) master of the Italian suspense film, tries his hand at science fiction with this stylishly mod twist on the vampire legend. Two spacecrafts on the same mission land on a strange, misty planet. The crew members each find themselves overcome by a hostile alien force which causes homicidal impulses in each of them. As the astronauts are killed one by one, the dead won't stay dead, which complicates things greatly for the remaining living crew who are attempting for unravel the mystery of the strange forces at hand. Great set design, pleasingly garish colors, and a genuine sense of dread have made this a cult favorite.

A Good Low-Budget Sci-Fi Thriller
An effective science-fiction thriller that transcends its low budget. While not a great movie, it is fun. The costumes and sets are good, and the music is eerie. There are some slow spots, but overall it's worth a look.

Moody Italian sci-fi/horror film
Mario Bava and other Italian directors of his era put style and atmosphere over logical plots and character building. So don't go into their films expecting a film to make sense but to present a certain mood. This was Bava's only real foray into sci-fi although it's really a horror film. One by one the crew are taken over by alien creatures who aren't vampires (the title is misleading-the original Italian title is Planet of Terror). Some claim the designs here influenced Alien or other later sci-fi films. Perhaps. The film has a twist or two in the ending. It's hard to distinguish the many crew members from each other and often they go off on their own when they should stay together. A great Italian Sc-Fi film!
This flick has everything, a mysterious alien planet, awesome spacecraft, giant alien skeletons and the coolest uniforms you'll ever see from the era! A bit thin on the plot side but this film knows how to set a mood. I'm sure Ridley Scott used this film as an inspiration for his Alien films! Along with a few others from this era. Pleasent suprise Planet Of The Vampires
This movie is a great drama from beginning to end, with limited special effects it makes a good B Sci-fi flick of it's era. The acting is a little stiff at times but the script is well written. It's about two space ships exploring the galaxy searching for life on other planets, both ships land and one is the focus of the story,while the crew of the other ship cannot be reached. The first ship sends a team to discover that the second ship has fallen victim to the unknown and the story continues from there I am not going to give away details, but I will say this is as good or better then a season 1 episode of the original Star Trek.This movie is a great drama from beginning to end, with limited special effects it makes a good B Sci-fi flick of it's era.
