This Is A Film Noir Gem

A superior, film noir movie in every way. It's well crafted, has an intriguing story, and is well directed. Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, and Vincent Price were all terrific in their roles. I have taken a liking to these old, B &W movies. They were low-budget, crime dramas but most had the best actors and directors the studios could muster. Low-budget does not mean cheap with these classics.

  • An exceptional classic thrilled, excellent.

One of the best black & white Noire movies of the 20th century, by far. Magnificently filmed & directed. The actors are truly amazing in their respective roles. Gene Tierney is one of my favorite actresses of all time. She is stunningly beautiful. You won't be disappointed by this classic thriller.

  • Laura Is a Classic Mystery and Song

Dana Andrews plays detective Mark McPherson searching for the murderer of Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney) in this classic film noir movie of the 1940s. Only Laura isn't dead. For about 1/2 of the movie we think she is dead as we hear the stories of the different people she was associated with. There is Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price), who was her fiance and a gigolo too. There is Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), her employer and "wanna be" boyfriend, whom Laura spurned for Shelby Carpenter. There is Ann Treadwell (Dame Judith Anderson), who wants Shelby Carpenter as her lover too and pays him for his favors. Any one could have killed Laura. But as I said before she isn't dead. And she did not fake her death either. She was away at an isolated country cabin at the time of the murder, and ...

  • Film noir classic

Laura is an engaging film with all the trappings of the film noir genre. A woman is killed and the detective becomes obsessed with her. And then the story turns on an event. Who was really murdered? Great performances. If you like the genre you'll like this one.

  • Excellent example of film noir.

Many reviews of LAURA make it sound like an updated version of REBECCA. Though both are excellent suspense films, the only plot element they have in common is that both involve a haunting portrait of a dead woman. Otherwise, they couldn't be more different, as Laura is not evil. In fact, she's a nice girl who unfortunately gets involved with some not-so-nice men. By modern standards, Laura may appear fickle for dating several men; note that this was perfectly acceptable in the 1940s. She could also be seen as hopelessly naive; few modern women could mistake Lydecker's creepy possessiveness for fatherly interest! Neither is Shelby (Vincent Price) the loyal fiance Laura believes him to be. Mystery fans will likely figure out part of the plot, but there should still be some surprises. An ...
