About this product

Product Information

Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message, and the government's witch hunt for the alien. Made during the cold war--when Americans were obsessed with the destructive capabilities of the atomic bomb--THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, thanks to its beautiful pacing, excellent dialogue, and haunting score by Bernard Herrmann, is still a treat for contemporary audiences.

THIS FILM IS WORTH SITTING STILL FOR!

THIS IS A SCI-FI CLASSIC FILM. IN THE 1950'S ALIENS WERE INVADING OUR MOVIE THEATERS. THIS IS ONE OF THE FIRST AND THE BEST. IT OFFERS A DIFFERENT KIND OF ALIEN WHO COMES TO EARTH TO DELIVER A MESSAGE. THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE AMAZING FOR THE TIME AND THE BLACK AND WHITE FILM ADDS TO THE NEWSREEL LOOK TO THE FILM. THE GREAT ACTOR, MICHAEL RENNIE IS PERFECT AS THE ALIEN. HIS TALL STATURE AND THE WAY HE CARRIES HIMSELF. ACTRESS PATRICIA NEAL AND A VERY YOUNG BILLY GRAY, BEFORE HIS FATHER KNOWS BEST SERIES, ROUND OUT THE CAST. THE WONDERFUL SCORE OFFERS SOME EQUALLY OTHER WORLDLY MUSIC. THIS WOULD MAKE A GREAT MOVIE NIGHT SELECTION.

  • An updated edition to this classic sci-fi film from the 50s.

I had the single-disc edition of this movie for several years until I found out about this two-disc special edition. I'm in a race against time to purchase so many updated editions to the other movies that I am going to sell someday this year.

  • This is an unbelievably good movie for 1951!

I was sitting by the '57 Chevy at Fry's Electronics Cafe in Burbank watching this movie on the projection wall at Fry's above the Cafe. I could not hear the words, but I new the movie pretty well. I decided that I wanted to go and buy it. I have some Science Fiction at home, but this is one of the best classic Science Fiction movies made in 1951, even before I was born. Besides, "War of the Worlds," "Forbidden Planet," I cannot think of a better Science Fiction movie from the 50's. OK, I will give Ray Harryhausen's film "20 Million Miles To Earth," honorable mention since his budget was lower than these three movies. This movie has excellent special effects for 1951! The story line, the music, acting with Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal as the main stars is all very well done.

  • The Classic Sci-Fi Movie

A lot of science fiction movies become infamous -- well-known for being BAD. Much the same way the TV series "Batman" is known for how campy it was, there are movies where the acting, plot, and/or "monster"/"alien" make the film laughable (not to mention the titles: "They Saved Hitler's Brain," anyone?). Science fiction is a genre that lends itself to terrible movies almost like no other. Not so with "The Day the Earth Stood Still." This is THE classic sci-fi movie, the one filmmakers should study before attempting to make a sci-fi movie. While "science fiction" the plot is completely believable. The acting, headed by Michael Rennie as the alien ambassador Klaatu, is superb. The special effects are certainly minimalistic and by today's standards look hokey (the spaceship looks like ...

  • Klaatu barada nictu

THE classic must see scifi with a not too subtle anti-war message. Made before CG and other sophisticated special effects. Everybody wears hats and smokes cigarettes or a pipe. Sam Jaffe was black listed and I think this was his last movie. Film was made during thw cold war and at the zenith of the McCarthy anti-communist witch hunt.
