The "2005" edition of the best-selling Madden NFL sports game series hits the field with another new season's worth of refinements and additions. Attention has been paid to the defensive game in this version, with enhancements intended to give gamers more options and more control when they're playing from the other side of the football. Many of this year's new features involve the NFL players themselves, however, calling upon gamers to maintain and develop their star athletes. Players are now rewarded for their good performances throughout the season, and individuals can be affected by the ebb and flow of morale. Madden 2005 offers "hit stick," control, which allows the right analog stick to be used to perform the kind of huge, momentum-shifting hits that fans will hear way up in the nosebleed section. Risks are involved, however, and players who miss tackles under the hit stick system's less rigid controls have only themselves to blame. Gamers can also involve themselves more deeply in defensive strategy than they could in earlier versions of Madden NFL. The new Defensive Playmaker Control system allows them to modify assignments for any player on the field, to set up blitzes, jams, and individual man-to-man coverage, right up until the moment the ball is snapped. Madden fans who are in it for the long haul will also find new Franchise mode features in this year's game. As they progress through the seasons, they'll be able to name their team's captain, claim their top stars as franchise players, and allow other players to take free agent status. A virtual Tony Bruno presents a weekly, in-game radio show that discusses all the major events in the league, and may allude to the personalities behind the players. When a player is unhappy, he won't play his best; the gamer can choose to make adjustments or trade him away. Franchise gamers can also read sports page-style announcements and check their in-game email to keep up on all the latest information. Once again, John Madden is joined by Al Michaels to provide color commentary and the play-by-play. Jill Arrington reports from the field. Gamers can even customize the fans in the stands of this year's game, choosing from thousands of possible combinations of clothing, headwear, face paint, and unique, team-specific accouterments. Other convincing new elements include pre-game and post-game shows, featuring confetti and fireworks, and environmental effects, with realistic lighting and weather that can change in the middle of a game. Hundreds of new animations have been added for more realistic player movements, both on the field and on the sidelines. The "Collector's Edition" of Madden NFL 2005 includes lots of additional documentary and interactive material, and playable versions of past games in the series. Nostalgic fans can enjoy ports of the Genesis version of John Madden Football '93, and the PlayStation versions of Madden NFL 98 (which used sprites) and Madden NFL 2001 (which featured 3D graphics), each with updated rosters based on the 2003-2004 season. A trivia game and several expository features are also available to collectors, as well as playable re-creations of what John Madden himself has chosen as the most memorable NFL plays from the last 15 years. As in earlier versions, network-connected Madden NFL 2005 gamers can log on to EA Sports Online to find a live challenge from a fellow fan.

Just a great all-out effort on this version in the franchise, with the Tony Bruno weekly radio call-in show, newspaper articles and NFL news you can select & read to keep pulse on what's going on locally and nationally, player morale for each player, and new fan models that are shown & visible in the stands during each game (much like sega espn NFL 2K5) -Graphics: 9/10 overall: really am unable to find any fault whatsoever with the 2005 player, stadium, uniform and all models as this is where the game really shines; If you like a graphically-aesthetic, polished football game than this is the one for you(for in this point the 2004 are very much interchangable) The biggest differences are the dynamic weather that changes during the course of a single game, new skies day & night (colors) and noticible sunsets during a game along with fireworks when the home team scores. -Finally, additional features/bonus content: 10/10 overall: -To conquer any small weaknesses in gameplay are more than compensated by the many bonus features that include all that the 2004 introduced the year before plus new pieces on the history and making of the madden phenomenon & tournament events, a 1000+ question(s) madden trivia game (much like the NFL trivia machine again in the sega sports espn NFL 2K5) In short, you will never run out of new items or options to discover in this edition, it has everything including old versions of earlier maddens (nintendo or sega genesis) as well as original playstation(PSone) era version(s) I believe it was the last year of the high watermark of what madden truly was-the 2006 was a bit of a decline mainly due to the field of vision (cone) passing) option which was not really considered user-friendly at any level. That said, the 2005 collector's ed. is probably the best along with the 2004, not to disappoint at any turn I strongly recommend picking it up as it shines even by today's standards even better than the newer ones that followed. overall: 9/10 -Joe S. a.k.a. Great PS2 Football Game
Madden is a great football game for the Playstation 2. There is a lot of action and is a game any football fan can enjoy playing. This version has great animation compared to the Nintendo DS version, which I have also played. The controls are rather easy to figure out especially if you use the tutorials. I bought this game because I am collecting all the Madden games and I needed the collectors edition but not only that, this game features the past Madden's and you can play the demo version of the games and see how far EA Sports has come to perfecting this game. It also includes the "hit stick" which allows the defender to make a punishing hit on the ball carrier. I love playing this game and would recommended it to any football fan.I bought this game because I am collecting all the Madden games and I needed the collectors edition but not only that, this game features the past Madden's and you can play the demo version of the games and see how far EA Sports has come to perfecting this game. It also includes the "hit stick" which allows the defender to make a punishing hit on the ball carrier. I love playing this game and would recommended it to any football fan.

Clean layout in the menus lead to fun times! :) Hates: OLD, OUTDATED, ETC. Gameplay was not so good back then... A few bugs in gameplay... Overall: Happy with this game and tho it is old still fun to play! This is Madden! Enough said....or it should be. The graphics are excellent, as usual! Easy to play! Collector's Edition! If you have this game, I'd advise one to keep it simply because it is a collector's edition and great game. If you don't have this game, get it.
