I bought the TC-14E III. I already owned the original (version I) TC-14E. I have now used both on my 500mm f/4 E FL and 300mm f/4 PF. Maybe the new TC-14E is a little more contrasty overall and a bit sharper in the corners than the old TC-14E. But you will have to pixel peep and look carefully to see that. Under normal viewing conditions, I can't detect a difference in image quality. If you want to save a couple of hundred bucks you can safely buy a used version I or II TC-14E instead of a version III. BTW, the version I and version II differ only in the paint used on the barrel of the body. They are identical optically. So all other things being equal, the version I is the best buy.

I run this converter on a 500mm F/4 and wow does it excel. There's a slight increase in contrast but I find opening up a 1/3 of a stop helps. The autofocus remains super fast and the resulting images at 700mm are astonishing. Tack sharp with no loss of detail. I've also popped it on a 70-200mm 2.8 and although the images are not as super sharp as the 500mm they're perfectly adequate. Great product. Love it.

I have used the series II of the Nikon 1.4X tele converter and the series III is a significant improvement. Images are sharp and all functions of the lens are preserved including VR. I have used this with the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II and 300mm f/2.8 VR II lenses - very pleased with the results!

Works well with a prime lens...only very slight image and auto focus degradation. The TC-14EIII 1.4X Lens Teleconverter also has a rubber gasket that completes the water resistance of the prime.

Put on my Nikon 500 f/5.6 PF lens. Image still tack sharp. A little on the expensive side.
