About this product

Product Information

This edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic is illustrated with 48 paintings by noted artist Michael Hague. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum. Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.

Reviews
Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest, facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo'alone and unaided'who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an entire countryside . . ., "Warm and dusky colors predominate in the handsome full-color scenes--forty-eight in all, including five lavish spreads--that embellish this edition, which is also beautifully designed." • The Sometimes Forgotten Masterpiece!

The Hobbit is the magnificent beginning to the now popular Lord of the Rings, Trilogy. This book should be read by anyone who loves the fantasy genre, but especially for those that have enjoyed the Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit provides, (with amazingly vivid detail) a stunning desription of Middle-Earth and some of it's history. It also introduces you to Gandolf and Bilbo and how they became friends; as well as the trecherous Golem and the story of how Bilbo came to posess "The Ring". All of this is wrapped into a fantastic adventure that really stands alone from the Lord of the Rings and yet is in my opinion crucial to set up and create the background for the Lord of the Rings. In summary; you will love this book all by itself with all it's orcs, dwarves, elves, dragon, wizard, ...

  • Hobhbit Collector

I purchased this book based on the the illustrations alone. I own ten copies of varying publishing dates and formats. This is a collectors item. Brilliant illistrations enhance the reading experience for those who cannot surmize the emense size of Smaug, or the size of the Lonley Mountain, or the splendor of Lake Town.
