In a response to a friend's call for help, Nancy's father, a lawyer, asks her to travel to mysterious Crocodile Island with her friends Bes and George to study the reptiles and try to uncover a group of suspected poachers. Upon their arrival in Florida, the girls are kidnapped but cleverly escape to pursue their detective work. Dangers mount as they cope with reptiles, enemy boats, and exciting chases after the men who are responsible for a sinister racket that involves many unsuspecting victims. In the end, Nancy makes a bold move to untangle the mass of clues, but she and Ned become imprisoned in the enemy's submarine and are held for ransom!

Fond Memories of Good Night Little Bear
My father used to read Good Night Little Bear to me when I was very young. It may well be the first children's book he ever read me. The story is about the loving relationships between all members of a small family. At it's center is little bear's feeling of importance and belonging. The bear family has happy relationships, and affection and humor that is reassuring to children. It also reinforces a nuclear family structure which is very functional, although gendered in roles. For example mother bear is probably a stay-at-home mother and she uses a sewing machine, as was common in the past. This story was written in the early 1960s, before modern families had most mothers in the work force, large numbers of children in daycare, latch key kids after school, technology constantly ... This book is still in print in the twenty-first century, a testament to the power of its positive portrayal of childhood attachment figures. One can imagine that the bear family generally has a peaceful and happy home life, time for their child, are emotionally available to him, and not too stressed. Therefore, this story reminds me of the feelings of comfort and security it brought me as my father lovingly read it aloud, because I knew the story was about us. And it was.
