Ok....IF this is a required item for a college class
This is an okay book, pretty with nice pictures. IF you are attending a live class with extensive tutorials from a knowledgeable instructor, I guess it would be satisfactory for learning medical transcription. If this is a required book, then you could save some $$$ with Ebay. However, if you are purchasing this book because you desire to study from home to learn medical transcription, by yourself, you'll pretty much be wasting your money. The book is only good for reference purposes (even skimpy at that) without the dictation tapes/CDs and several hundred dollars worth of additional reference books needed. I've listened to the dictations and they won't help train you to transcribe professionally. You may luck out and get a real low-paying job with this course, but you'll be handicapping ... You may luck out and get a real low-paying job with this course, but you'll be handicapping yourself (and fooling yourself) if you choose this book as your main study. If you do want to study at home, that option is available via Andrews School or M-TEC. If you want a chance at ever getting a job, decent paying, in the medical transcription industry, you really need to go the Andrews or M-TEC route. Their graduates are routinely hired without the usual 2-3 years experience. You could possibly do the self-study route by getting an excellent medical transcription program from HPI (Health Professions Institute). However, you'd be severely handicapped by not having a "big name school" graduation certificate in your resume. If you do the solo self-study, make sure that you have the English skills (graduate level) necessary for self-assessment. No matter what route you choose, make sure that they offer the SUM medical transcription training program. This is the gold standard for transcription training. It is comprehensive and very difficult and will take approximately 500 hours to complete the Beginning Medical Transcription course. Another 500 hours would be needed to complete the intermediate and advanced levels. Even after all that training, you'd still be a mere beginner as far as professional medical transcription goes. (Then, your training really begins!) Not just anybody can do transcription. It's not a matter of simply typing what you hear.

EXCELLENT MATERIAL
In my studies to become a fluent transcriptionist, this book was required course material for a class. My opinion is that it was an EXCELLENT book. The content summarized within each chapter was specifically targeted for dictation of that particular area of study. The words can be listened to prior to transcription of the case and looked at in the book as it is said so that we become more familiar with how the word is spelled AND pronounced (that can sometimes be the hardest part!!). There are also sections within the book that are quite concise at grouping together relevant information, such as abbreviations (including HOW-TO abbreviate: i.e. all caps, all lower caps, periods or not, and so on), standards for formatting reports, and lots of helpful websites. I bought this book for a college class that I am taking (it was required) and it is so helpful. As a future medical transcriptionist, this book shows you how to do all the forms and letters that you need in order for the medical records to look professional and complete for legal purposes. It also has most of those hard to spell and pronounce medical terms all through it. It helps you to learn how to use the words and defines them. I really like this book. I have decided to keep this book even after I finish the class just as a reference for future questions I may have pertaining to the material in this book.I bought this book for a college class that I am taking (it was required) and it is so helpful. Great learning resource but you need the VERY EXPENSIVE dictation tape to make it really worth while. There is no way to practice typing dictation without it.
