His own life now in danger, Hannay sets out to solve a mystery. "The 39 Steps" richly displays Hitchcock's complete and playful mastery of the language of filmmaking. Jamaica Inn (1939 | B&W) 98 Min. Alfred Hitchcock was a recognized legend in his own time. Among his wide range of skills was his ability to spot raw talent, especially in his earlier years. He took relative unknowns and gave them their first big breaks. That was precisely the case with Maureen O'Hara, who was cast in Jamaica Inn alongside the great English actor, Charles Laughton. In the movie, Maureen plays an Irish orphan girl (Mary) who lives on the rugged coast of Cornwall with her uncle. After several vessels smash on the deadly rocks, Mary begins to suspect it's more than accidental. By the time she realizes what's going on, she is a target for the marauding smugglers and highwaymen who are ravaging the area. Sabotage (1936 | B&W) As early as 1936, Great Britain was suspicious of Hitler's military buildup. In that foreboding atmosphere, England's filmmakers responded to the German threat by making movies that alerted British citizens to the impending danger. The plot of Sabotage is true to the title. As German saboteurs infiltrate England with plans to blow up key industrial and civilian installations, the British spare no effort to trap the Nazis before they can complete their mission. Soon, Scotland Yard focuses their attention on a small theater, run by the charming Mrs. Verloc and her timid but peculiar husband. The Yard plants an undercover agent to investigate the theater further, and with that the conspiracy begins to unravel. Easy Virtue (1928) Laurita Finton is accused by her husband of being in love with an artist. There is a trial, but the artist, who has been rejected by the girl, kills himself. Laurita's world is destroyed so she decides to leave, changing her identity and starting a new life. She falls in love with a rich young man, John Whittaker, but his family doesn't like Laurita, a girl with an "easy virtue". John's mother finds out about the shadows in Laurita's past and tells everything to her son.
