About this product

Product Information

Based on the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case (from which two other films, COMPULSION and SWOON, were also derived), ROPE both challenges and terrifies the audience. Alfred Hitchcock disdained the whodunit crime story, which he felt lacked emotional force, and ROPE shows the director's preference for letting the audience know more than the characters onscreen. The film opens as two young men (Farley Granger and John Dall) strangle a friend just to prove they're intellectually capable of committing the perfect crime. To add to the amusement, they hide the body in a trunk that will serve as the dinner table for a party honoring the deceased. The film hones in on an hour and a half of the party, with the constantly moving camera capturing the changing emotional atmosphere as the guests grow increasingly concerned about the fate of the missing boy. ROPE is a directorial tour de force, blending complex camera movement with intricate staging to present the entire story in near-real time in one location. Notably, the adaptation of the play by Patrick Hamilton was written by perennial Hitchcock actor Hume Cronyn.

  • One of Hitchcock's finest!

Rope was a film that suitably impressed me the first time I saw it (on YouTube of all places!). Very gripping from beginning to end and it must've been quite daring at the time to have the killers be the protagonists, and have them be strangely likable (if utterly unsympathetic of course). The structure is also unique to me. We know who the murderers are, as well as the how and the why, and even where the body is hidden. We, like Brandon and Phillip, are one step ahead of all of the other characters. The question consequently becomes not "Who killed David?" but "how will they get caught?" The arrival of Jimmy Stewart as Rupert amps up the tension, since he is just as smart and clever as our murderous duo and it becomes a subtle and weirdly polite battle of wits between him and Brandon as ...

  • He was dying to get to this Party~Hitchcock Masterpiece

PLOT: 2 students decided they can mastermind a murder then put the body in the buffet and celebrate their own cleverness with a Party~ John Dall AND Farley Granger are EXCELLENT as the two students who are both brilliant and have no scruples~ they kill a fellow student by stangling him and hide his body in the buffet and invite his Parents and girlfriend to the Party to celebrate their clever deed~ John Dall is the most bold of the two and Farley Granger is the follower~ feeling they are so superior they get to choose who can live and who can die..is the motive for the murder ~ as the party progresses the nosey maid passes on clues to JIM STEWART who becomes suspecious by the boys behavior and the odd gossip the maid passes on to him~ Stewart is a former teacher and they even try and ...

  • This Plain Guy Loves It!

Hitchcock never gets old! This one mixes together several tensions at once: Strong hints of dom/sub homosexuality, past and present lovers brought together at the same party, a budding romance between old friends that you know will never actually happen, and of course the main theme: Serving dinner to the parents of a son they just murdered, and serving it from the chest they stored him in, while inviting a deep discussion of murder. Made to seem like it was shot all in one take from a single camera, you're not distracted by staccato shots from multiple angles - it's almost like you're right there in the room with everyone. I'll let someone who really knows movies take it from here!

  • A low key but intense murder drama!

This is a unique and entertaining movie that Alfred Hitchcock never replicated. Filmed on a one room set with more cameras than crew, plus a great cast as well. One of his best not to be missed.

  • Civilized beastiality!

Rope is an excellent look at psychopathic personality types who seem to have it all together in their bantering around the lot. Yet for all the seeming civility there lurks an inhumaneness, a coldness to human cruelty and barbarity that defies logic and imagination. While there is very little of actual violence shown in the movie, the treatment of murder by a character absent of conscience and apparently fixated with pseudo intellectual aspects of venting his insane hatred of the human race is a telling one which needs some exploration in that many such personalities do abound with similar tendencies to over-intellectualize the lack of a human disposition to such matters as casual killing for the sake of a sick thrill. Jimmy Stewart cries out for some sanity in this respect and quite ...
