Likes: Very, very good base map includes major and minor roads and other surface features. Just about the cheapest receiver that displays cache descriptions, logs, and hints (paperless geocaching). Easy to load new geocaches in a pocket query or directly from the geocaching website. Dislikes: Battery life is about 10 hours, not as good as my Garmin. Display is fairly small and can be difficult to see in weak light. Overall, this is a very good choice for a first-time geocacher. It is easy to operate and has all the features you want and need to be successful.
I purchased this unit because they are no longer being manufactured and there doesn't seem to be a newer model at this price point. Though designed for geocaching, I've taken this on vacation to avoid the cost of renting a GPS at the destination. Most handheld GPS units are Garmin, but this Magellan unit is okay.

Had to send the first unit recived back do to a battery compartment that had been assembled wrong. They made me pay to send it back. The new replacement unit had a defective screen. They did pay shipping on that. The third unit works just fine but I do have trouble getting the joystick control going the way I want. The unit seems to be slow at updating your movement relative too the cache location when you are in "go" mode. It also takes to long listing nearby caches, sometimes you need to hit the back button and start over with the search. If you have a problem navigating the units functions there is no manual to check until you can get online. The model does have many great features if you can figure them out. If you do get this remember to reset the shut-off timer on it or you will be always restarting it. As I have already had trouble just getting a working unit I am taking a Garmin unit along with me for backup.Read full review
This product works great as a secondary geocaching GPS or if you are ONLY looking at geocaching with this device. this GPS is so easy to use and is wonderfull for what it offers. only thing i wish is that the screen was just a bit bigger and that you could put in a memory card instead of just using the GPS internal 2GB, would be nice to have a little more storage. I have a Garmin oregon 550 and i would not expect it to be in the same catagory as my oregon but for strictly geocaching this is am a,azing device and will get the job done
Bought for first time geocaching. The eXplorist GC is very easy to use. Still working on trying to download multiple caches quicker. it is small, lightweight and water resistant. The only thing this could use as an improvement is a compass that works when you are stopped...you have to walk 10-20 feet for the compass to engage to get a good direction. overall a good starter GPS for the basic geocacher!
