This is a great camera to use for semi-professional work, or for the hobbyist. The picture quality is amazing, and it has a dazzling array of features. IF you are still recording on a tape base format, then this is the pony to bet on. Be careful about purchasing used model. Ensure that the mechanism is in good condition, otherwise the repair bill may be high. All in all, this is a high quality unit.

This was a MAJOR investment, involving ALL members of our production company (Not Me Productions). I decided to purchase the Sony HVR-Z1U camera based on it’s use in the TV arena, recommendation by a MAJOR studio representative and the NUMEROUS positive reviews it has received to date. Also, the deal offered by '4rrest' was GREAT! A fair price with extras thrown in. This camera has performed superbly! It is EVERYTHING the critics said and more! We have used it on one documentary shoot and one TV Sitcom shoot (with a 2nd rented Sony HVR-Z1U) with excellent results. As suggested by Sony (and others) we shot everything in 1080i using the new Sony PHDVN-63DM Digital Master tapes and edited with Sony Vegas (7) in HD. The training video that was included with the camera helped all the camera operators (3) get ‘Up to Speed’ quickly, avoiding costly mistakes and taking advantage of the cameras' new features. The only issue we’ve encountered so far involves transferring the ‘Universal’ timecode from the camera into Vegas but that’s not any fault with the camera (we ‘Synced’ both cameras to make editing easier –it worked on the cameras, but not in Vegas, so far). Virtually EVERYTHING can be MANUALLY controlled (to an 'old time' photographer, that's the ONLY way to go). But, if you wnat FULL auto, you can do that as well. The 'Gain' control and presets allow this camera to work in VERY low light with little 'Gain Noise', a real surprise. In short, just can't say enough about this camera. Thanks again to '4rrest' for providing accurate information and FAST service.Read full review
Initially I bought this camera to teach my daughter how to use a real prosumer camera and not her iPhone. Well, she wasn't interested but I have fallen in love with this camera. It produces an HD image, and when you set it to manual, you can really get the best out of it. The controls are well-placed and easy to manipulate once you get the hang of it. As for the tapes, well, they are outdated but you can't complain knowing what you are getting. They do make devices that hook up to the firewire port and record onto a hard drive. If you are looking for an inexpensive prosumer camera before you spend the big bucks, I would recommend this camera.

This is a great used camera. Great for my startup film production, "Wayout There Productionz". This is one of several Sony film cameras but one of the top ones that will be used. It has every feature we are looking for and yet because of it's age, we expect to get many shots with this bad boy and last a long time. What a great buy!

The camera came as shown in the various pictures accompanying the sale information. That means there was no power supply or strap (neither of which is an issue for me, as I purchased this camera as a replacement and already have those accessories). The case is strong and is a roller - perfect for traveling! Also, this item arrived two days after I place my order, which is better than I expected. Thank you!
