Great lens with beautiful image, but really bad focus breathing

Image you getting from this lens is wonderful. The build quality is great and it feels very solid. (Although it on a heavy side). There is one major drawback for me: it's focus breathing! It's so bad, that at first when I rotated the focus ring, I though I'm zooming! It change the focal length so drastically (about 30% from close focus to infinity). It's very bad for video purposes. For photo it's not a problem at all. Focus motor is pretty slow, but works ok. Not usable for video, but for slow pace photo-shooting environment it does work fine.

  • Perfect for 4k Video on a Canon 5D Mark IV

This lens turned out to better than I expected it to be. I only use it for 4k video so this review does not lend itself to the photography capabilities. Shooting with a Canon 5D Mark IV, this lens is incredibly sharp. A relatively short range in focal length, but that doesn't bother me one bit. Shoots well in low light situations (video). A lot heavier than I thought it would be before I purchased it but for the situations I use if for (wedding ceremony & receptions) it's always on a tripod or monopod. 5D4 has a 1.74 crop in 4k mode so I get about an 87-174mm focal length, which is perfect for my use. Drawback is that this lens is made for APS-C sensors so I can't use it for photography work. There just aren't any telephoto lens' on the market that stop as wide as f/1.8, which is why I ...

  • Do you really need f1.8 ?

This is a very heavy lens, and nearly as big as the typical 70-200mm lenses. Overall I like it, but it doesn't really have much range from 50-100mm isn't a huge difference, or really just a few walking steps forward if using a prime 50mm. So a 70-200mm f2.8 such as the Tamron may be a better option for you. Also something to consider is this is made for crop sensor bodies, so unlike the Canon 70-200mm F2.8, this can't be used on a full sensor body. However, the lens is very sharp with a beautiful image, and the focus ring is long and smooth for easy video focusing. The auto focus is not as responsive as the Sigma 18-35mm which I think is all I would have purchased, given that I already have a 50mm, 85mm & a 135mm (manual focus Rokinon lenses). Overall I can do without the Sigma ...

  • Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 Art Lens + Canon 80D, a great pair of performers

This lens performed very well in low light on 2 video shoots and a few portraits, not a lot of experience with it yet, but so far so good. It produced very sharp video with great color rendition and in the lowest light on one end of the stage it managed to still produce great results with a little help from the good low light performance of the Canon 80D. So far this lens has delivered everything it promised.

  • New Favorite Lens

I have the BMPCC4K with the Sigma 18-35 and this 50-100 and I have to say this is my new favorite lens outside of using my Ronin-S. Such a sharp lens with a perfect focal length with the 1.5 crop
